D200 Wireless Ttl Flash

Hi hope the D200 users can help. I understand that the D200's built in flash can be used to set off the SB600 flash whilst off unit. I have tried but cant seem to quite make it work. If anyone can give me a simple flow chart on how to achieve it I would be really thankful.

Many thanks

Nogbad

I understand D70s and D200 have a built in IR commander similar to SU-800 (unsure of part number). This IR commander can trigger both SB600 and SB800 flash units following its own settings.

Stephen,

I have brochures out and have watched the movies but none explain the settings. On the X or Hs do you have to set a channel up in the menu or on the flash unit. Just assuming there is something to set up somewhere so the two units can communicate.

Hmmm, on the X and Hs there is no built in commander. Instead SB-800 acts as a commander or master and signals on one of four channels. These channels have an A,B,C and D flash permitting up to four flash units to be 'commanded' by one SB-800. Settings can be different for all units on the selected channel i.e master unit at 1/2, B at 1/16 and C at 1/8 etc.

There are four separate channels to avoid interference between several flash photographers all using the wireless IR signalling system from SB/SU-800's

To be clear the X and Hs just take the pic therefore SB/SU-800 handle the lighting in both i-TTL and manual modes.

Stephen,

Its a crazy world. I have the 80-DX and have not read the manual as I use MANUAL MODE, and yet I have just downloaded the SB-600 manual to try and make head or tail of all this fancy auto modern day stuff. :D :D :D

Strike one Nogbad. I am in the D200 instruction book page 161 Custom Menu.

Custom setting e3 : Built in flash mode.

Options are :

TTL , Manual , Repeating Flash , and COMMANDER MODE That is the one you would require to set.

I will check out the SB600 to see if that mentions selecting a particular channel.

Don

PS : See also page 163 , 164 , and 165 for set up info.

Thanks Don will look at the settings

Nogbad,

Page 60 to 65 of the SB-600 instruction book gives info on setting the flash for Wireless Lighting.

Now to try and put it all together. I am assuming you have a free shooting bank on your D200. If you are like me then you probably have 3 free.

Select menu and highlight the camera symbol. Select Shooting Bank. All free banks will show. Select a free bank and enter. Refer to my previous post and find pages 161 to 165 and set accordingly. Now all things being equal when you want to use the pop up as a commander all you need to do is select that bank from the menu. Might be a good idea to rename the bank so you always know. :)

I hope this works.

Don
