Also love the Sigma 105 mm F2.8 macro.

Can't go wrong with them. Won't necessarily break the bank either.

Been there ..... seen it ...... bought the D200 .... got the free NX Capture ....... you sure need it to process RAW files on Nikon!

Its not at all a bad little programme that...

My idea of a good bird shot may not be yours - you see I have a thing about faces ..... not really interested in the rest of a bird, person, insect etc...

I was also thinking in terms of the Sigma 10 - 20 mm - which I also have. When you get it "right" with a wide angle lens, the results are stunning. And it is a different perspective, as you say.
