Default ftp address

Can anyone give me an example of what I should type in these boxes, I have been trying to do some updates on my web page and I have never been able to do it through the software. I have been doing things manually which takes hours. It always come up with wrong username or password, I think it the ftp section that is wrong.

I have posted two examples one which is blank and one with what I have put in leaving my name and site off.

Hope this helps.

Account name is your arbitrary name for the connection.

Ftp address is ftp://ftp.<your webaddress without the www bit>

Port 21 (TCP port number for FTP connection)

Folder is the initial folder on the server or wed address (depends on your ISP)

Name and password are your unique log on details.

Thanks Stephen, I have tried so many different combinations but it still comes up with the same problem. The only thing I can think of it doesn't like serifs webplus's way of doing things. I can log in doing it on site but not through the software.

Are you connected through a router? If so you will probable have to do Port forwarding whatever that is, I haven't managed to sort mine out since I started using a router instead of the modem I had before.

I use a router with Cuteftp lite with no probs - I'm note sure this is still available but if not I think its only a fairly small exe file & I could email it or put it on a disc for you

Christine,

Have you tried your username without the freeserve suffix? If you have a look around your ISPs home page, there should be a section on how to log in to your web space which lists all the settings you should use.

I wonder if the account name you have entered should have the ftp prefix? I would expect this prefix on the address box entry, but not the account name entry.

Having said that, I had similar problems to yourself, I rang my ISP and made enquiries. It turns out that my web space was accessed using a different password to my normal web browser/email access password. You may have the same problem.

For uploading to my web space, I use Smart ftp
http://www.smartftp.com/
Free for personal/non-commercial use.

Thanks for the replies.

Hi Mick, I am not using a router so that can't be the problem.

Duncan, My user name and password are the same all the way through, I don't have a problem if I just go to the site and login. They do recommend I use ftp but can't find it anywhwere. I have tried phoning them to get the correct address with no luck, they say to go to the help files. In the help files it says to use sitebulder.orange.co.uk in the ftp space and it still doesn't work.
I have downloaded the program they recommend, Terrapin, that doesn't work either, it comes up with username or password incorrect. I am totally stumped. The screen capture is what they recommended.
The only way I can update my site is to add any photos in the software, save it and then delete the whole site and reload everything individually. It takes hours.

Christine

I'm sure the problem is some of the details that you are entering in your FTP client are incorrect. Attached is the equivalent window I get with mine (WS_FTP LE - not CuteFTP lite as I thought)

Note
  1. the host ftp address in my case does not include my website address - it is a generic ftp sever used by blueyonder. My website address is "our-space.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk" - NB I have taken the site down while I play with site styles - see website critique thread and I'm using a URL redirection service
  2. the user name "our-space" (user ID in your case?) is one I specified in my self care settings - it is not the same as my log in name although if you have not chosen a a name for your webspace it may be the same.

I suspect it is point 1 that is causing you the problem, but you should be able to obtain the orange ftp sever address from thier website.

Hope this helps
