Default good advanced compacts?

hey ..so i joined here with the desire of a DLSR..
after researching..its not what i want as it wont suit me because its so big..

i want a camera thats not too big...has video...manual controls (exposure and shutter speed especially)

and just an all round decent camera and not too expensive...

ive been eying up the canon G10 and G9 and nikon coolpix P6000

but i dont think i could do the G10 justice...i do want good quality...but im not sure is its worth £340 to me lol...

i love macro shots and landscape...and will also be used for fun photos..parties..friends etc..

thanks

Some of the guys at the local paper use Canon G9 and G10 compacts. They are very good, produce RAW files if needed, and have manual control if required.
I quite liked the slightly smaller early 'S' series stuff. (S60 or S70, can't remember). Has a CMOS (a good one) digital sensor, like DSLR's, but smaller (smaller than the G series too). Styling a bit like a brick, but they're fantastic quality........However, you're always going to come up against it in terms of lens quality, particularly in lower light levels.

Might be worth checking out the secondhand market, as these Canon compact cameras usually get over-looked by people looking for the better styled Fujis that look more like DSLR's, to impress their mates down the pub.

hope this helps?

The main difference is the lens range: G10 has 28-140
G9 has 35- 210
G9 still available for £240 at good 'ol Amazon.
Don't forget all the cameras have Programme mode so will be suitable for beginners but with the opportunity of all the other modes as you learn more. That is important as you may become frustrated in the future if you do not have full control. The G9 will take a dedicated adaptor for both wide angle and telephoto whereas the G10 will take a telephoto adaptor only.

Only you can answer that one, depending on your feelings towards one or the other and the depth of your pocket!

Richard, you need to ask yourself what you want in a camera, and what you want from it. Decisions will normally get narrowed down to a couple of options after these questions are answered.

Enjoy whatever you eventually buy. You sound to me as if you are still rather undecided so I would strongly agree with Joe. Some useful review sites are:
http://www.dpreview.com
http://www.dcresource.com/
http://www.imaging-resource.com/
There are plenty of others but I rate these three.
