Default Teleplus 2x converter

I have an old teleplus(Kenko) 2x converter - when used on the 350d it does not report back to the Camera (eg f4 lens still showing f4). I thought this combination was supposed to Auto focus if the light is good enough? On mine the lens hunts and then gives up, I have never managed to get it to AF.

Given a high contrast subject in good light, I'd have thought it would lock-on as well. f8 of light in front of the camera will generally make AF pretty grim and far from reliable... i'd stick it in manual focus, that's a lot quicker and more reliable than iffy AF.

cheers
