Default How to photograph lightning?

Here's a question I've always wanted to ask, so here seems about the best place to start!

How do people go about photographing lightning storms during the night?

Is this possible without any specialist (ie expensive) equipment, is it a case of setting up long exposure times and hoping for the best or what?

Matt

Thanks Foxy for the ref.

I haven't seen that before and enjoyed it very much.
Now all I am missing to take picture of thunders, apart from lack of thunder itself, is that taller person needed next to me. Is it fine to ask my wife (Shorter than me) to wear very high heels or its better to call on a tall friend?!
