Lone sheep under a tree in the snow

Description: If only this sheep had stayed in this exact position ,when I tryed for a shot with a telephoto lens,but he was having none of it,and wandered off.Bit of a messy broken branch to the left of the shot,but this is ,in a way ,a classic Cumbrian image,sheep in the snow,on a hill,and often sheltering under a tree.

Description: This shot needs something/someone on the road,dog walker,cyclist etc.But a beautiful view.A washed out sky again,I'm afraid,but I wanted to pick up the small tree to the upper left of the shot,along with the snow in the background.

Description: We have very little snow,in this part of the UK due to being on the coast,but there was a slight dusting of the white stuff,showing on the tops earlier in the week.

Description: This ewe had 3 more youngsters,and she was obviously enjoying a well earned lie down,but junior was having none of it.He climbed as far onto her back as he could manage,she eventually stood up,he fell off on the other side,then promptly dived underneath for a drink.

Description: Spotted these ewes with their youngsters in a local farmers field.One Mum had 4 lambs.The farmer was keeping them in a small field next to the farm,just to make sure that all were safe.

Merganser "On Golden Pond"!!!

Description: I have so many shots of reflections with trees and water etc,that thought I would find something different for this months comp.A bird shot ,again,sorry!!!. Waited for this female Red-breasted Merganser to swim into the late afternoon sunlight reflecting on the water .The many colours in the water were enhanced by two boats which are moored nearby.

Description: I took this shot in August at 10-45pm.I wanted to capture the Swans who always sleep near the bridge.See extreme left!!!!.But,nightime shots are not my forte,but messed around in Elements,and this was the result.Cannot remember how I achieved this effect,but I quite like it. The row of lights in the background are shining across the bay from Askam and Barrow in Furness

Snowdrop

Description: Just thought I would post this one shot taken today,all other shots were birds .Took this with a telephoto lens,and re sized quite small,cloned out a couple of distractions,and popped on it the frame I used for my website image of the same,as it just makes it stand out a little.Will eventually get around to taking some proper macro shots. Could be sharper,but using a telephoto for close ups is a little dodgy.I was resting the lens on a wall.

Last heli shot

Description: Thought I would just show this shot,as the rotar blades are actually turning.I posted a heli shot,ages ago,and the blades were stationary,albeit it was in the sky.So how these managed to be shown rotating,I don't know,pure luck.This is either one of the machines used to transport workers to and fro the gas rigs,which are situated off Walney island,or,it could have been of the Air Rescue fleet returning from Helvellyn,where a man was fatally injured.

Description: young Jason,taking his 1st solo flight in his helicopter,but the lapwings were not impressed. Jason,by the way,is the son of my husbands boss,they own the holiday home sites here in Haverigg.(Just in case you thought we had our own heli pad!!!!)

A proud father

Description: This a very special shot.We have a pair of Swans who have nested at the side of our river for 14 yrs.But sadly no eggs produced any offspring ,except for 2yrs ago.This little guy was born,and he was the apple of his dads eye.The female is much older than the Male which could possibly account for the fact that the eggs were not fertile,albeit the female sat on her eggs,for the full term,and it must have been so sad for the parents when no offspring arrived.But this little chap did appear,and rode around on his Dads back,whilst his Mum sat on the remaining eggs,hoping and waiting. I was unable to capture the whole of the Swan in the frame,as he was directly underneath me,as I leant over the river wall,but I was more interested on managing a shot of the cygnet as he sat up on his Dadas back,feeling safe and secure. Hope you like this shot. A Happy New Year to all WPF members.

Support for Roy's Starling.

Description: I do not usually post bird shots on this site,but when I saw the lovely shot of the Starling from Roy,thought I would just show this shot taken on Friday,yes with the 40D.Cam,not important,but to to show people that Starlings are not the dull boring birds that they may appear to be.Beautiful luminous highlights in their plumage,when in full adult colour.Very funny,intelligent,gregarious birds. Perfect pests at times,but their antics and squabbles really are amusing to watch.

Description: The sun was passing across the Combe and over to the hills in the background.It picked up the Autumn colours of the fir woods,on the side of Lowscales.The town of Millom is visible,with St Georges church spire ,an excellent landmark.

Industries from Time past

Description: This shot shows an actual mining cage from the old Hodbarrow iron oar mines.I chose this particular shot,as it shows the tools etc which were used.Note the red colour of the miners clothes.In the background there is a painting by a local artist showing 2 miners pushing the small hoddy containing the iron ore. The mining site is now our local nature reserve,a nesting area for breeding Terns etc,and a permanent home to many species of birds. There is still iron ore under the ground ,all around in this area,when it rains,lots of deep red puddles.Also was does occassionally find a piece of the iron ore.

"Luminous "Starling-2

Description: I have put 2 at the side of this pic as I do have an image of that name.In that pic,the Starling had flown out of the river and onto a wall,an his plumage looked as though he had been covered in mousse/oil. I was messing around with this shot,and found a filter somewhere in Elements,applied it,and it actually highlights the amazing metallic colours which do show in the plumage of these birds when they catch the sun. The original shot which was one of my 1st shots using the 100-400 lens around 4 yrs ago,is on my website. I just like the way the bird is highlighted.Not much sun when I took this shot.

Description: Spotted this Painted Lady butterfly on the carnation(pink) through the window ,only managed 2 shots before it flew away.Did a crop with the image ,not bad .No time for settings or focus etc,just a quick point and shoot.

Small boy feeding the ducks

Description: Sorry there are no ducks in the pic,the one where the ducks came to him,the ducks were blurred.I liked the expression on this childs face.His dad was hanging on to him as he kept leaning over the rock and into the water!!!.Just a candid shot,using a telephoto lens,had to try for a shot when he was not looking and was still!!!.quite dodgy taking shots of children,but luckily in this village no one minds ,the kids stand and pose .
