The Clarendon was named after a 345 ton full rigged ship that came ashore at nearby Whale Chine in stormy weather with great loss of life. Some bodies are still at rest in the local churchyard including a memorial. Of all the many shipwrecks in the area, this was I think the worst. It was so bad that despite warning before this tragedy, it led to the building of St Catherines lighthouse in 1837, seen in other pictures I posted last week, and completed in 1840. The timbers of the Clarendon, completely broken up, was used to build many house in the village. The pub, known as the White Mouse, was renamed The Clarendon after the ship. Today, the pub has returned to its former name, a new wing added on, but the original building is still there which is now a hotel and still known as the Clarendon in memory of the ship and those who lost their lives. There is, as they say a story behind every picture. Being lit up by nature is quite fitting as nature destroyed the ship. Vessels came ashore due to fog which often affects this coastline as well as gales pounding the coast. This would now be a collectors item due to the manner it was sent. I was working aboard the old Arcadia at the time. This picture is in connection with the pictures I posted in Transport of the native canoe and ships lifeboat picking up and dropping off mail in tin cans. I think this letter took four months to reach home. Once again sorry for quality of picture but my aim as with the other two pictures is information, not quality. The stamps are stamped Niuafo'ou which is why they are so special. Please note that the date on envelope is different to the date of the canoe and lifeboat pictures. This was another cruise. This was near the end of a three month circle Pacific cruise, and the other the start of a new circle Pacific Cruise. We had a hard life in the merchant navy?!.

1 comment Pompeyfan Wed, 22 Oct 2008 10:44:51 +0100 Tin Can Island Canoe and Arcadia Lifeboat /gallery/showphoto.php?photo=35427

by: Pompeyfan

Description: This is the canoe the natives of Niuafo'ou Island or 'Tin Can Island' used in 1973, not quite so modern as the boat shown in Porthole Paul's picture in same section taken more recently. This is taken from a slide so apologies once again to the experts. I tried to reduce the colour a bit but it must be understood that in the southern hemisphere the skies are very bright and seas a natural blue on a sunny day, but my aim is not the quality of the picture colour or otherwise but to point out the different boats used by the natives now in comparison with Paul's picture in same category. We were leaving mail in tin cans to be franked on the island and also picking up mail from other ships to take to Nuku'alofa. Please see the envelope that I posted from the island in 1973 in Miscellaneous with address blanked out. Well, this is it. I used to drive miles in it. It is sitting outside of my room in the living quarters of Cornwall Hospital Cornwall Park Auckland. The hospital is not sadly gone. To all professional photographers, sorry about the quality but this is scanned from a print and is as good as I will get it. I did however have one of the best cameras at the time, 1970, the latest Pentax, the best camera I have ever had.
