Description: Shot metered in evaluative because of the perponderance of mid-tones. Conditions: early morning, thick marine layer, very diffuse light.

Description: Ambient light is from the upper right and slightly behing the bird; as can be seen from the rim highlight about the head. If exposed at this position of the primary light source the face and breast of bird would be last to contrast. Fill flash is used to blend the light so as to render the face, breast and provide catch light to the eye. A ratio of -2/3 EV on the flash and -1/3 EV comp. in camera is use to achieve the desired result.

Description: Captured with: Canon 20 D: EF 500 IS L @ f 4.0: Exp 1/400 @ f 7.1 : EX 580 Flash gun (fill flash) -1/3 Ev comp : ISO 200 : white bal 5700 K : RAW format : monopod Fill flash is used to bring out the highlights in the black feathers; 5700 K white balance is used to offsed the otherwise cool temp of 6000 K of the flash gun.
