Mon and Her Sister

Description: Mon, the littler one, and her sister, whose name escapes me, sell trinkets to tourists at one of the Angkor temples near Siem Reap, Cambodia. I was lucky enough to spend some time chatting with them in the shade one hot afternoon. Very sweet, very intense kids. I will never forget them.

Description: If you go to Cambodia to see the temples around Siem Reap, be sure to visit the Artisans of Angkor workshops. They are an NGO supported outfit that trains Cambodians in high quality, traditional craft production, and they'll take you around to see the items being produced. Very interesting. Lots of photo op.s, and great gift shop. :-)

Description: This schoolyard in the old part of Luang Prabang offered action, lovely late afternoon light and 'moments'. No one in the yard took any notice of tourists like myself stopping to watch and snap a few pictures. Laos is good that way; a wonderful place for a holiday.

There She Goes!

Description: I spent November taking a CELTA course for a Cambridge English teaching certificate. Near the end, the local Thais we were teaching brought fireworks and fire balloons for us to celebrate one of their biggest festivals, Loi Kratong. Here, one of the paper balloons is released. They look like UFOs when a group of them are seen from a distance. Hundreds of them released at once are an awe inspiring sight.

Description: Two overgrown thaats (called stupas in some countries) at Wat Chom Phet (I think) on a hill across the Mekong from Luang Prabang, Laos. According to Wikipedia, these structures are rich in metaphor, "the shape of the stupa represents the Buddha, crowned and sitting in meditation posture on a lion throne. His crown is the top of the spire; his head is the square at the spire's base; his body is the vase shape; his legs are the four steps of the lower terrace; and the base is his throne." A three shot panorama, shot with a Hoya 72R IR filter and a custom white balance using green vegetation as the neutral. 30 second exposures and iso 800 made necessary by the camera's strong built in IR blocking filter.

Description: The Leper King, Terrace of the Leper King, Angkor Thom, Cambodia. Located within the enormous Angkor Thom complex, this enigmatic statue presents one of Angkor's many mysteries. It may depict one of the two Khmer kings who according to legend suffered from leprosy, or Yama, their god of Death, or.... Modern buddhists drape the nude form and burn incense in respect.

Description: The Angkor temples at Siem Reap, Cambodia were abandoned long ago when the ancient Khmer civilization succumbed to invasion. But today they are alive with local children and, in some places, tree roots. Sometimes it pays to wait in a good location for something to happen. One very hot afternoon I sat in the shade at the east gate of Preah Khan watching the people come and go. Then the drink-seller's babe started to run in and out of the massively overgrown doorway....snap!
