Evening rest

Description: This is the oldest locomotive on the Harz Mountain Railway. It was built in 1897. On this day it had headed a two locomotive special to the summit of the Brocken and is seen back at its base at Wernigerode inthe evening. It is a Mallet design where the front cylinders and wheels are on a pivoting bogie allowing it to take sharp curves.

Vintage special

Description: These two Mallet locos were pulling a special to the top of the Brocken in the Harz mountains in Germany. They are just approaching the summit. I was lucky to get them as I was waiting for the descending train when I heard them approaching, when there should have been no train. Luckily the train has to climb round a loop of over 360 degrees to get to the top so I had time to get to a suitable place to catch them. the locos were built in 1897 and 1898.

Four-spotted Chaser

Description: Last year I started to try to photograph damselflies and dragonflies. I've got a 90mm macros lens but you have to be close to your subject. My 18-200mm was quite good but I needed more reach so I invested in a 70-300mm. By then the season was over so I've had to wait until now to try it out on my intended targets. This is a crop from an "as close as you can get" trial where the whole photo just cut off the ends of the wings. I can't wait for more species to emerge.

Description: Taken in Queenstown, New Zealand while I was touring on holiday. The aim was to land on the beach on the edge of the lake in the middle of the town. Some managed it, some ditched in the lake and two got tangled up in the trees along the road.

Description: Ex Southern Railway, King Arthur Class loco 30777 Sir Lamiel hauling the Cathedrals Express from London Waterloo to Gloucester. Photographed at Steventon Causeway Crossing, west of Didcot. I had got there well in advance and practised on some of the high speed trains passing so that I got get a shot that I am very pleased with.

Misty morning.

Description: This wasn't the shot I set out to capure. I had been on an early morning train the day before and had passed some bales of straw lit up by the rising sun with a bit of mist on the field. So I set out the next day but found the sun's light was filtered by thin cloud ruining the intended shot. However as I started to return home I saw this scene instaed.

Garden Spider

Description: This afternoon I found a nice large garden spider on its web. Any attempt to get near it to photograph it led to its running up its web and hiding under a leaf. So I went back after dark with a torch and there it was in the centre of its web and it didn't budge when I shone the torch on it. So armed with the torch to illuminate it for my autofocus and an external flash I tried several night time shots. This is probably the best.

Tranquil scene?

Description: This scene of the river Thames just above Marlow looks nicer and quiet. Nothing of the sort! Marlow regatta was taking place and the crew seen were rowing up to the start point for a race. A little later all hell broke loose as three teams of eight boys raced for the finish accompanied by loud shouting from the supporters on the shore.

Description: Our local RSPB had a Sumatran Rainforest display. To amuse the children it was populated with cuddly toys. One of these was this large rattlesnake, complete with rattle. I expressed a liking for its cartoon style face and was therefore presented with it after the display ended. It is having a rest in our baby Bay tree.
