Male Rufous Hummingbird

Description: This is a close up of the adult male Rufous that was chased off by the immature bird, which was really only following his instincts to defend a feeding source, especially as that morning it was the first time the temperature had dropped below freezing. Here he is perched on the bracket which holds the feeder, while the other bird is actually on the feeder!

Description: Here's the photo of the immature Rufous showing the adult Rufous, who is the boss. Not the best quality, but it was early on a frosty morning and through a window.

Immature male Rufous Hummingbird

Description: This immature male Rufous Hummingbird is spending the winter in my garden. He is very aggressive and chased off the adult male Rufous, which was already here, when we had our first really cold spell of weather at the beginning of December. I'll post a photo of the fight! This photo was taken with my new Canon 30D and new 300mm IS lens and 1.4X extender.

Female American Kestrel

Description: This very co-operative female American Kestrel was photographed in Aruba 3 years ago, while we were on a cruise through the Caribbean and the Panama Canal. She was perched on a lamp post at a road intersection on the outskirts of Oranjestad. I had only had my Canon Rebel a few weeks and was still leaning how to use it! I have added a reply comment to my previous photo of the male American Kestrel in this gallery (http://www.worldphotographyforum.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=12977) with a link to my website for a re-processed photo.

Description: This beautiful male American Kestrel was also photographed at Bosque del Apache NWR in New Mexico. We were driving the auto tour loop when we spotted him in this characteristic hunting hover. Cars can make great photo hides (blinds)!

Cranes in the Early Dawn Light

Description: Another shot from Bosque del Apache in New Mexico. We were expecting all the cranes to lift off together, as the Snow Geese had done before dawn, but they didn't. They either stayed put or slowly walked out, stage left, in groups of 3 or more!

Young Bald Eagle

Description: We saw this juvenile Bald Eagle during our trip to Bosque del Apache NWR in New Mexico. He has not developed the typical white head and tail of an adult eagle yet. This was one of our great photo ops at this wildlife refuge, as he allowed us to get some good shots with the 300mm lens before he flew off.

Winter Dawn at Bosque del Apache

Description: In late December of 2004, we visited a magical place in New Mexico - the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. On this morning we arrived before dawn to witness the morning flight of the Snow Geese and Sandhill Cranes. A lone Bald Eagle, perched on the tree in the middle of the lake, added a special touch to this dawn landscape.

Pied-billed Grebe

Description: This is the first and only time I have ever seen this species of grebe out of the water! I don't blame it, really, as the green sludge on the water surface did not look pleasant.

Eastern Coachwhip

Description: This is a non-venomous snake, which we found at the entrance to a small cave, where an Eastern Phoebe had a nest. We do hope it didn't eat the nestlings after we left, but there was nothing we could do but let nature take it's course.

"Tired" Burrowing Owl

Description: Captured this cute little Burrowing Owl, early one morning, on our way to the Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge, California in 2001. The image was taken with our very first digital camera -an Olympus C700UZ, which was only a 2 megapixel camera, but had an impressive 10X optical zoom lens. Thought the tire (tyre) qualified as a common everyday object!

Description: We were driving along the Smith Dorian/Spray Trail - a dirt road in Kanananskis Country in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies, when this coyote came down out of the woods to drink. Then he loped along the verge for about a quarter mile, marking his territory, before disappearing into the woods again.

Violet-green Swallow at nest

Description: We were enjoying a cold beer on the patio of a restaurant at Emerald Lake, Yoho National Park in the Canadian Rockies, when this beautiful swallow flew in to it's nest in the eaves of the building, right above our heads. It always pays to have your camera ready!

Description: We found this Pileated Woodpecker nest in an aspen tree, very close to a picnic area in Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies. This large nestling looks as though it is almost ready to fledge!
