A happy Rhino-mum

Description: Actually, this rhino-mum belongs to the category of 'desperate housewives'. She is the only rhino living north of the River Mara (in that area); she went across to meet the males and disappeared for three months before coming back to the northern shore. There after some months she gave birth to a young rhino. This possibly explains her happy face.

Description: Rundale Palace was designed by the famous architect F. B. Rastrelli as a summer residence for the Duke of Courland, Ernst Johann Biron. The palace was built from 1736-1740 and the Rococo interior decorations were added from 1765-1768.

Description: Fresco "The Seasons" at the Centre of Lithuanian Studies (Univeristy of Vilnius) made by Petras Repsys between 1976-1985 Shown is a small but representative part of the frescoes that cover completely 4 walls and the ceiling. Frescoe is slightly damaged.

Description: This Madonna of Vilinius is located in the Ausros Gate. This gate was built in the 15th Century. The painting is dated between 1600 and 1625. Copies of this mDaonna can be found in the Church of St. Severin (Paris) and in Rome (St. Peter Basilica).

Description: Library dating from 1630. Smuglewicz decorated the walls in 1802-1804. One of the rare items kept at this library is Copernicus' "De revolutionibus orbium coelestium" (On the Revolution of Celestial Bodies) dating from 1543.

Description: Zierikzee was in the 14th-16th century a prosperous port / trade center, at the time even more important than Amsterdam. It had commercial links in particular with England and the Nordic countries. The picture shows the ZuiderHavenPoort (the southern harbour tower). It dates from the 14th century.

Description: A Symphonion is a pre-decessor of the gramophone / phonograph, usually dating from appr. the 1890's. This one is located in the Castle of Count of Schwarzenberg in Schwarzenberg. Field Marshal Karl Philippe, Count of Schwarzenberg (1771-1820)was the military commander in Austrian service of the Russian, Prussian and Austrian forces who defeated Napoleon in 1813 in the Battle of Leipzig, also called the Battle of the Nations. The actual battlefield was chosen by Schwarzenberg's colleague, the Austrian Field Marshal Radetzky.

Frauenkirche, Dresden

Description: The original Frauenkirche dates from 1743. This church was not destroyed by the bombs that fell on Dresden February 13, 1945 but it collapsed two days later because the sandstone building was for the greater part pulverized by the extreme heat generated by the bombing. Reconstruction started in the mid-nineties and the church was reconsecrated Oct 30, 2005. On the left-hand side some scarred remains of the church destroyed in 1945. On top one sees a cross made from nails extracted from the ruins of the church destroyed. This cross is a gift from the community of Coventry (UK). February 13, 2005 it was officially handed over to the Bishop of Dresden as a symbol of reconciliation.

Town musicians of Bremen

Description: A donkey, a dog, a cat and a rooster, all mistreated by their masters, decide to go to Bremen, known for its freedom, to live without owners. On the way to Bremen, they see a lighted cottage; they look inside and see four robbers enjoying their ill-gotten gains. Standing on each other's backs, they decide to perform for the men in hopes of gaining food. Their 'music' has an unanticipated effect; the men run for their lives, not knowing what the strange sound is. The animals take possession of the house, eat a good meal, and settle in for the evening. Later that night, the thieves return and send one of them in to investigate. It is dark, and he sees the eyes of the cat shining in the darkness. He reaches over to light his candle, thinking he sees the coals of the fire. Then the cat swipes his face with her claws, the donkey kicks him, the dog bites him, and the rooster chases him out the door, screaming. He tells his friends that he was beset by a horrible witch who scratched him with her long nails (the cat), by a giant who clubbed him (the donkey), and worst of all, by a terrible demon who screamed in his ear. The thieves leave the cottage to the strange creatures who have taken it and the animals live happily for the rest of their days. A fairy tale by the Grimm Brothers
