Description: This is the same spider as my previous post, but this one shows him in the attack position, with his woven net held in his front legs. Any prey that wander past will get wrapped up in the net before they even know what hit them.

Description: Here's another photo of an ogre-faced spider. They are also known as a net-casting spider, as they weave a small net which they use to snare their prey. They're very hard to spot as they look like sticks, but they stay very still which makes them quite easy to photograph.

Neptune and Triton

Description: I debated whether I should even post this one as it is extremely underwhelming from a photographic point of view. It's Neptune and its largest moon Triton, but given that it's only a blue dot, you'll just have to take my word for it. In my defense, it's a long way away!

Centaurus A galaxy

Description: This is a photo of the galaxy Centaurus A (NGC 5128). It's around 15 million light years away, and is quite distinctive due to its dark dust lane. This galaxy is believed to be the result of an elliptical galaxy and a spiral galaxy colliding. Due to its high level of radio emissions, it is believed to contain a 1 billion solar mass black hole at its core.

The Orion Nebula

Description: This diffuse nebula is one of the brightest and most spectacular in the sky. This shot was taken using my Canon 300D and a 300mm telephoto, mounted on a German Equatorial telescope mount to track the target during the long exposure.

Description: I quite like this photo as it's entirely illuminated by ambient light. It really brings out the detail of the incredible destruction that termites can cause.

Australian White-tailed Spider

Description: This species of spider is generally blamed for any bad bite that can't be accounted for. It is said to cause 'necrosis' around the bitten area, due to flesh-eating enzymes, though there is very little supporting evidence of this. If I were the thrill-seeking type, I would let it bit me, and then make my own judgment - but I'm not.

Description: These guys 'play dead' when threatened, which enabled me to take this photo from literally millimetres away. They are a very small spider, and unless you get really close you never get to see this 'pretty' face.
