The Truck Shop was the company store, Ironworkers were paid in company checks, it meant that they had to spend their wages in the Truck Shop, the company made sure that their prices were 50% higher than other shops and the workers had no choice other than to shop in them, many got into debt and were tied to the Tuck Shop indefinately or they slipped away over night taking their debt's with them, parliament outlawed the Truck Shop system but the law was ignored and the practice continued into the late 1800s in many areas. In Bleanafon more than 30% of the annual company profit was made through ripping off the poor Ironworkers!!!

9 comments Whimbrel Wed, 14 Dec 2011 12:48:37 +0000 Llangors Boats /gallery/showphoto.php?photo=60805

by: Whimbrel

Description: Sometime in August I was doing some dragonfly recording around Llangors which is the largest natural lake in South Wales, I stopped for a break and took in the pleasant view, I was taken with the small sailing boats and their bright sails, I thought the scene might make a nice pic, problem was I only had my 105mm macro lens with me...so I took this snapshot, think it lifts the spirits to see what a proper Summer day looks like in the middle of our darkest Winter days. This recently taken image is virtually seen as taken, the only processing done was a tad of High Pass Filter in Nikon Capture NX2 to help define the many leaves, shots like this give me a real buzz - don't you just love Autumn/Fall...

14 comments Whimbrel Sun, 06 Nov 2011 20:54:44 +0000 The Salmon Weir /gallery/showphoto.php?photo=60391

by: Whimbrel

Description: I spent quite a bit of time watching Sea Trout that weighed as much as two pounds trying to find a way up and over these falls near the Salmon Weir, the river was in full spate and they were driven back by the powerful flow time and again, some will find their way to their spawning grounds higher up in the Black Mountains, what incredible effort they expend to create the next generation, but once it's done sadly they die. I don't usually attempt shots when the water is in full spate, but on this occasion the autumn light on the trees and water was just too good to miss.

4 comments Whimbrel Thu, 03 Nov 2011 16:32:28 +0000 Ghost Boat /gallery/showphoto.php?photo=60326

by: Whimbrel

Description: I know it's nearing Halloween and things can get sort of creepy, but try to imagine my surprise to find this strange image in among my shots of autumn on the canal...wierd tricks in camera methinks!!!

5 comments Whimbrel Sun, 30 Oct 2011 16:50:21 +0000 Autumn Water /gallery/showphoto.php?photo=60302

by: Whimbrel

Description: Up with the lark yesterday to take advantage of the weather, hardly any wind and blue skies with the first frosts, a good chance of getting some reasonable reflective shots of the pines on water on the reservoirs in the Brecon Beacons. This time of year is well suited to panorama's, and this one is three frames 'stitched' together and then edited using Nikon's Capture NX2. This small waterfall is one that I've photographed many times over the years in all types of weather, it has often proved tough getting all the right conditions at the same time for any reasonable shot, for this one I used Shutter Priority with a camera setting of 1/25th of a second, aperture was f22. I usually keep my White Balance set at Cloudy for all my landscape photography shots and it proved useful on this occasion to help with side-light issues. For those of you interested in Post Processing it was edited in Nikon Capture NX2 from a NEF #RAW# file. NX2 has an excellent D-Lighting facility which can work wonders when editing images taken in poor light conditions, this September has been perhaps the greyest I can ever remember and the D-lighting in NX2 really has been a great help. Thanks for viewing.

15 comments Whimbrel Mon, 26 Sep 2011 14:43:37 +0100 Afon Taf Fawr /gallery/showphoto.php?photo=56917

by: Whimbrel

Description: There are lots of interesting rivers throughout Wales, perhaps this one is not as famous as the Severn or Wye for example, it does however have a claim to fame as the river that gave us a nickname that's common for Welshmen all over the world...Taff! With so many feet tramping up and down it causes a huge problem with erosion which can be clearly seen in the photo. Many volunteers work to create 'pavements' of stone in the areas most at risk, but it's almost an impossible task as more and more visitors want to enjoy this beautiful area of Wales.

12 comments Whimbrel Mon, 07 Mar 2011 20:57:30 +0000 Twyn-y-Gaer /gallery/showphoto.php?photo=56748

by: Whimbrel

Description: The bracken is rolled and gathered to use as bedding for the farm animals during the often long upland winters in the Brecon Beacons. The domed hut is built on a support structure of oak timbers (known as a crannog) out in the lake, it provided some form of safety for it's occupants from enemies. The lake abounds in fish and wildfowl so most of the tribe that lived in such structures did'nt need to travel far for food. Beyond you see the snow dusted Brecon Beacons.
