Description: This volcanic peak served as an important landmark for Vikings traveling between the east and west coasts. The highlands of Iceland are mostly an uninhabitable desert of black volcanic sand. The journey on horses generally took three days and was the best way to go, since fording the rivers in the lowlands along the coast was generally too dangerous.

Description: Cropped from the original 4:3 micro four thirds aspect ratio to 2:3 by eliminating some of the foreground. It was fairly soft due to the limited DOF (the 300mm f/4 Olympus lens is equivalent to a 600mm f/4 FX lens).

Description: As we approached the cub was the first to wake up and poke its head just over the edge of the ice bank (like the "Elroy was here" drawings from WW2). Only after the cub had climbed on top did mom sit up to see what was going on.

Description: My guess is this bear had never seen humans before, let alone ten photographers on the deck of an icebreaker. Anyway, he was curious and came within 20m. The deck was 3m above sea level, so we were at eye level with the bear as he scrambled over the ice hummock.

Description: Sn�fellsj�kull is a 700,000-year-old volcano on Sn�fellsnes Penisula in western Iceland. The latest eruption occurred two thousand years ago. The lava fields at the base of this 1,446-m high mountain are densely covered a large variety of plants, but mostly moss.

Spring Thaw

Description: Vatna Lake on the SE coast of Iceland. Fresh water in the lake comes Vatna glacier (out of the picture on the left), as do all the icebergs on the far side of the lake. The lake empties into the Atlantic Ocean (out of the picture on the right). When the tide is going out, there is a strong current flowing to the right resulting in breakup of the ice covering the lake.

Anan Creek 1

Description: Anan Creek in SE Alaska is one of the few places in the world where black and brown bears intermingle to feed on salmon. Somewhere between 200,000 and 300,000 pink salmon swim up this small creek in late July and early August each year. The visitors platform above the creek is about a hundred meters from the bay. The acorn mussels on the right of the first image show the high tide level, since salt water mussels never grow above that level.

Description: Brown bear fishing. Anan Creek is in a coastal rainforest and there is a high level of tannic acids in the water. Thus the water has an amber tint.

Monument Valley at Night 2

Description: Composite of 47 30-second photos taken from inside a large Navajo sandstone cave. Warm light from a Coleman lantern was used for the first four frames. The streak crossing the star trails was in three frames and is light reflected from the International Space Station (ISS). According to NASA' web site, the ISS was visible for a minute over Monument Valley at 7:58 p.m. on the same day and at the same time the three frames were captured. How's that for luck? Furthermore, the nearly full moon didn't come into view until I had captured enough images to create some nice star trails (the glow from the moon is just visible on the lower left rim of the cave's opening). Had the moon moved into view earlier, its brightness would have completely washed out the entire picture.

Monument Valley at Night

Description: West Mitten in Monument Valley is usually photographed looking east and the "thumb" is to the right. However, I was on the east side of the monument. The camera was pointing west, so the star trails are fairly straight. [Sixty five images (14mm, f/4, ISO 400, 30 seconds) were stacked using StarTrax. The series was started one hour after sunset. The light of the rising moon was enough to get a good exposure of the mitten but did hide a lot of the stars.]

Description: This was the time I've ever seen a mockingbird and is the only shot of one from my 2-day trip to Texas back in October. The first day a mockingbird landed on a branch nearby but after focusing it in the viewfinder I was mesmerized by its beauty and forgot to trip the shutter before it flew away.

Green Basilisk Lizard

Description: A juvenile green basilisk. This guy was on the ground 2.8 meters from me. I would put its length at 15 centimeters, or about a fifth of its full-grown length. The green basilik lizard is famous for its ability to run on water. A close relative of the Costa Rica basilisk lived in Europe about 40 million years ago. [f/4 380mm, 1/60s at ISO 1600; no flash]
