Description: Taken in the dim light of a clockmaker's workshop in Lons-le-Saunier, Jura, France. The Jura region was a major centre of clockmaking (like their Swiss neighbours a few 100km away across the border). However, the ancient craft of mechanical clockmaking is dying out with the inexorable rise of electronic movements. This clockmaker, a friendly man in his late middle age, deplored the fact that few were willing to purchase new mechanical clocks, despite going 'ooh, that's nice' when they see how it's made. The photo is taken with available light (powerful desk lamp and dim overall light in the room) at f2. (PS Strange line in the centre of the pic is a scanning defect that has since been fixed).

Description: 'O Geros' is Greek for 'The Old Man' - Ikaria has a tradition of longevity, where people frequently live into their nineties while leading a full and active life. This guy was easily over 90 and carried on dancing and drinking until 3am! Here he is dancing the masculine Greek dance known as 'Zeibekiko'

Description: The age-old dance of the island - a huge spiral following the winding melodies led by a violin. A very communal experience, and my ears nearly bled while taking this - I had to stand next the speakers to get this view!

Description: Taken at a traditional Greek party at night. Pushed film and wide aperture for a grainy, contrasty, blurred-out look; this goes well with the tipsy, hazy atmosphere and the blurred perception induced by the loud music and strong wine.

Description: Old stone shed with rough and ready wooden door. The contrast in the scene was perfect for B&W and the lighting was very soft and low, this being late evening. Focus not perfect due to f1.4 aperture (because of the low light).

Description: Shot in very low light at Arethousa, a traditional village on Ikaria, Greece. I liked the state of decay but tried to keep both doors to emphasise the duality, the idea of two doors leading to one thing.

Description: I used the red channel of the full colour pic (Bullseye, in the Miscellaneous category) in order to make the red bullseye stand out, before adding a little extra contrast. I will reshoot the piccy later to get the focus right but I'm just playing around with different possibilities regarding colours and tones.
