Colourful Caf�

Description: This caf� in Whitstable had a very colourful interior decor. Not so much a case of "well spotted!" as it was kinda difficult to miss. I liked the patterns and geometry in the structure of the building combined with the colours, shapes and angularity of the furniture. They did a good cuppa and teacake too.

Christmas Visitor

Description: This male muntjac deer has been quite a regular visitor to our garden over the past week or so. We used to see one (usually female) about 4-5 times a year, but this one has been in the garden almost every day since the 23rd. Previously they've been a bit skittish and scarpered after just a few minutes, but this has been hanging around for several hours at a time. I think he likes the warmth and cover given by the evergreen laurel hedge and the compost heap behind it. Taken through double glazing, so not the sharpest image.

Tagging by Car Lights

Description: I've often seen this local bridge and wondered how to pull a picture from the curved shape. With the recent "Long Exposure" competition theme it gave me an idea. It was only once I'd started exploring the bridge on foot that I saw all the "tags" (graffiti) on the supports and underneath.

Yellow Plus Blue Makes Green

Description: This was the shot I originally had in mind when I set out. I ended up triggering the flash via a remote "peanut", fired from a flashgun fitted to the hotshoe. Gun on the shoe was pointing up at the ceiling and on minimum power to not add any light to the scene whilst still providing a trigger for the remote gun behind the diffuser at the back of the shot. Following Rudra's suggestion, I've removed the sheet of glass the whole lot was sitting on.

Description: Not the shot I had in mind when I first set out, this was a 'happy accident' with putting the flash too close to the backlight diffuser - my synch lead wouldn't stretch far enough to put the flash any further back. Playing around with food dye.

Family Portrait

Description: A new area for me, some friends asked if I'd do a family portrait session for them. I did lots of planning, thinking about different poses I could get them to do and working out the lighting for each set. Oh, how naive. Just getting a two year old to look in vaguely the right direction and smile at the same time as her parents is a challenge that almost had me beaten. I doff my hat to Lesley (thanks for the tips), and others who do this sort of thing on a regular basis. You lot have my admiration. I expected working with a small child to be hard, but not that hard.

Description: I saw the posters on the door for the slimming group(s) first, and then noticed the bags of pork scratchings in the window. Wonder if this is some kind of cartel? The butcher's wife runs the slimming groups, the butcher ensures there's plenty of demand for his wife's business. Ah, the temptation.

Description: This is a stack of 7 images at different exposures processed to give an HDR image. I would have liked to have a person standing at the base of the window to give a sense of scale, but getting them in the same place/pose for all shots would have been tricky.

Description: One of a couple of kids practicing their skateboard moves. I liked the punchy colour of this one's t-shirt against the turquoise of the sea. His mate was a better 'boarder, which meant his friend didn't wave his arms around so much - this one photographer better as a result. ;)
