Description: Posing nicely, though on the other side of a fence, so I had to use the 300mm end of my zoom lens rather than the 60mm macro (darters often return to the same perch giving a chance of a close-up shot)

Passchendaele, 100 years on

Description: ,Today (July 31st 2017) marks the 100th anniversary of the start of the Battle of Third Ypres, often called the Battle of Passchendaele, during World War I. This memorial is built on top of a German pillbox at the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery at Tyne Cot near Passchendaele, Belgium.

Description: With all the stormy weather we've had this week, I've been looking back at some of my sunnier (and warmer) wildlife shots from our various holidays. In 2010 we stayed at the well-known location of Rocamadour with all the surrounding tourist attractions, but in the gorge below the town was one of the best single sites I've ever stumbled upon for butterflies, etc. This is just one of about 40 different species I identified (some not totally sure about!) in just a few hours on a couple of days

Description: Alassio, Italy. There's quite a long wall here with lots of plaques featuring famous visitors to the town of Alassio. Hemingway seems to have the first position and a much bigger plaque than most!

Description: Passing through Diano Marina. This is quite a busy main line from Genova to the Riviera towns such as Imperia, San Remo, Ventimiglia and on to the French Cote d'Azure. The last time I was here, about 4 years ago, a new line was being constructed a short distance inland, so this scene may already be a thing of the past.

Description: Thick cloud earlier in the evening made me think I wouldn't get a shot, but there was only a thin wisp of cloud around midnight so I was able to get this. No obvious size difference from any other evening, but it was certainly very bright (1/800th sec and ISO200, though I under-exposed quite a bit to stop burning-out the brighter areas)
