The earliest known Marshal traction engine in preservation. Victoria was owned between 1980-2002 by our friends Peter and Shirley Fagg. During 1980/81 they carried out significant restoration work, and it was testament to Peters engineering skills that once restored Victoria was always in the showroom condition that I hope the photo conveys. Apart from helping to clean, I was lucky enough to be invited to steer Victoria on occasion ........ A real honour. This photo dates from the mid 1990's. When I came across this oneI thought of Mo as he is an Agricultural engineer. The full neg is shown for Jim to assess if the style of including the film rebate would suit any of his portraits taken with the Yashicamat. After a days work at a steam rally Fowler ploughing engine 13880 is put to bed. These engines were made in pairs, LH & RH. Weighing in at over 20 tons each these were not suitable for directly pulling a plough, so instead they would operate from the headland on opposite sides of a field, hauling a balanced plough across the field with a wire rope. The winding drum holding 800yards of wire rope is mounted below the boiler. These engines were also used for dredging field drains and rivers and also mole draining fields with a heavy clay soil.

5 comments Don Hoey Sun, 19 Dec 2010 15:35:33 +0000 Sightseeing /gallery/showphoto.php?photo=52894

by: Don Hoey

Description: On Sunday we were passing by Ely, so took the opportunity to have a look round the Cathedral. Last years big thing for me was infrared on the cheap. While Stevie was in the shops I walked the streets of Norwich with my compact, a D100 and 35mm lens. Luckily I had a hoya IR filter with me so managed to get this shot of Norwich Cathedral from across the playing fields. A bit trickier than one might think, as without a tripod I had to frame then hand clamp the camera to a wastebin before attaching the filter to make the 1/6sec exposure. With the IR filter in place you cannot see anything through the viewfinder.

2 comments Don Hoey Fri, 05 Feb 2010 17:33:15 +0000 Metal Art /gallery/showphoto.php?photo=45884

by: Don Hoey

Description: Well actually it is the lever for one of my winter diy projects, a camera quick release clamp. Quite a few hours have been spent carving this from a 30mm dia steel bar, and I kept it on the bar as long as possible in the hope I could get this image. A bit of a nightmare to photograph though as it is polished to a chrome like finnish. The workshop is a bit of a tip, no possibility of a fancy flash set-up, so it was just placed on a bench and lit by the workshop lights. Black flags and white reflectors were used to try and show its form.

4 comments Don Hoey Tue, 29 Dec 2009 17:27:41 +0000 Duxford Spitfire - 1984 /gallery/showphoto.php?photo=43645

by: Don Hoey

Description: This is a from a colour negative ( ILFOCOLOUR HR100 ) photographed with the D2X and converted to positive in CS2. The flash dates back to 1976 and would have been targeted at press guys, so I used my F2 with drive attatched to be period correct, and give it scale. Jims got two of these that I have been working on. One is an adjustable output master unit, and one a slave unit running in tandem off the same power pack. The battery pack is bigger than the F2 and weighs a ton. In use that would have been draped over the shoulder and the flash connected by a coiled cord. For Jims benefit, and knowing he is a flash novice, I did nothing fancy here. This was taken with a brolly attatched to the master unit and the light output controlled by the connected VarioControl masking taped to the camera. The VarioControl operates over an eight stop range and senses light reflected from the subject, and quenches the flash when sufficient light is recieved by the cell. Due to its high trigger voltage the main unit was triggered by my SB80-DX and an optical slave out of sight on the floor. A single reflector was used to fill the shadows.

7 comments Don Hoey Tue, 07 Jul 2009 17:35:41 +0100 Castle Ruins /gallery/showphoto.php?photo=41430

by: Don Hoey

Description: A crop from a larger 5 frame pano false colour infrared of the ruins of the castle at Castle Acre. Following on from the micro adjustment on the Manfrotto sliding plate I needed to come up with a plot to micro adjust focus to take a series of images for focus stacking. This device is an interpretation of the Follow Focus system employed by movie makers without the significant spend. Apart from the time taken, and off cuts of metal used, the cost was £4:57 for the toothed belt. I will try to take a series of pics tomorrow and post an explanitory of what it actually does.

8 comments Don Hoey Mon, 26 May 2008 19:40:19 +0100 Made in the USSR /gallery/showphoto.php?photo=28160

by: Don Hoey

Description: As the ' A Trip Down Memory Lane ' has come to the top of the pile in the Cameras Forum I thought I would take this pic. The Zorki-4K was a Russian copy of the Leica and dates from 1972 - 1978. I bought it at a car boot sale as memories of the period. Base is Rudra glass with white card background. Ignore exposure compensation shown in the exif - finger trouble. Exposure is manual.

10 comments Don Hoey Sat, 02 Feb 2008 17:35:22 +0000 Toolpost Mill /gallery/showphoto.php?photo=28078

by: Don Hoey

Description: Something I made a few years ago to allow me to machine intricate shapes from bar material mounted in my Myford lathe. The motor is high torque, running through a gearbox and is powered by a Minicraft variable speed tranformer. Cutter height ( 1/4" minimills ) is controlled by the large knob giving 10mm of movement either side of centre. Despite being told in the early stages that it would never work, it does, and this allowed me to make parts like the end cover shown, and the headstock on my model Drummond lathe. For this picture Rudra glass was used for the base ( details in the flash thread ), with white card background reflected downwards. Multiblitz flash was used as the main light, with SB80-DX clipping the top of the background card to give a graduation effect.

10 comments Don Hoey Wed, 30 Jan 2008 19:56:32 +0000 Sunset over the chicken farm. /gallery/showphoto.php?photo=27976

by: Don Hoey

Description: According to the weather forecasters its all going back downhill after today so I just had to take an outdoors pic before returning to flash.

7 comments Don Hoey Sun, 27 Jan 2008 19:33:23 +0000 Drummond 2 /gallery/showphoto.php?photo=27721

by: Don Hoey

Description: Just could not resist another shot before setting up for Foxy tomorrow. The model is made to a scale of 2 inches to the foot, based on my full size machine. It is 6 1/2 inches long and everything works. To seperate the model from the black mirror effect I had to use a grey card to reflect onto the surface. I guess if it will reflect a grey card, then it will also do the same for any other colour. Lighting is by a softbox above and aimed slightly forward, and a bit of kitchen foil as a reflector for the front.

15 comments Don Hoey Thu, 17 Jan 2008 19:46:12 +0000 405 Geared Head /gallery/showphoto.php?photo=27088

by: Don Hoey

Description: Taken today while testing my 75 pence DIY snoot.
