Don't get dejected, try lots of styles, experiment and, above all, have fun learning rather than beating yourself up about not being the perfect photographer.
Sometimes the magic touch comes after a lot of sweat and tears but better it comes after many fun hours of trying.

Well said Meadowman and Mike

Also I came across this page in pbase
http://www.pbase.com/aztec36/profile
which takes you to some 'best' selections quickly; these images have an infinitely wider scope than the ImageResource competition winners and more CONTENT - less of the laconic style I reckon is equivalent to the 'soundbite'

also as someone else said you can communicate with the photgraphers you admire/want to learn from (though may be not so easily if you do not have a sub)

There are some excellent and inspiring images there and you should let them be just that not as some kind of goal that must be met but rather develop your own style :) ..but I have noticed with landscapes in particular there is now a trend/fade for oversaturated un-natural colour :)
