I'm afraid Dreamweaver for me was like Photoshop CS2 must be like to an absolute newbie. I simply couldn't get my head round how it worked. I'm now using Serif WebPlus9 and amvery pleased with. Essentially it works in a DTP kind of way ie WYSIWYG however the web features are quite powerful. Its easy toget to know and use, has its own built in ftp but creates all the code in a separate folder if you want. My current site HERE was created with it. Needs a few tweaks but I'm pleased overall. The galleries were done with JAlbum, and a plugin I bought

Stephen how did you do all that your site looks Brilliant, I have only got round to doing the basics, it looks like I will have to read the manual and find out what the program can do. I didn't realize you could do animations.

Ah, yes forgot about that, its a bit of Java script generated by a slideshow prog I have. You just copy and paste into the insert html window and inport the files using the same window, piece of cake :) If it was difficult I couldn't do it :D

It's very hard to beat FrontPage for simple web site construction. It's fully wysiwyg so no knowledge of coding is required but you can work in code if you wish to. I've yet to find anything that it won't do.

I have only messed about for a bit of fun so I use Nvu which is a free download from http://www.nvu.com/ and Filezilla as an FTP client from http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/ which is also a free download, works for me, a bit clunky perhaps but I only do it to make a bit of use of the free hosting I have and it is fun.

Have you tried EzGenerator. It has loads of templates is really easy to use, has built in ftp and the license allows for 2 installs.

If you are a photoshop CS user, check out its web templates. If you are in bridge, select a bunch of your photos, go "tools", "photoshop", "web photo gallery" and then select whatever template you like.

These templates are stored in program files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS2\Presets\Web Photo Gallery. What I do is having chosen a basic template I'd like to use, I copy the files for that template into a new folder under the web photo gallery presets, then manually tweak the code of the relevant files.

You can see an example of this (the site is still under construction) if you go to http://www.didiphoto.co.uk/Birding/ and then click Accentors, Birds of Prey or Buntings. Those pages are made from Adobe Photoshop web templates. It is an incredibly simply way to design a gallery.

Though I produce a lot of the layout in my site in Dreamweaver, I have found a couple of useful programs especially for creating photo galleries, the first is Xara webstyle 4 which can be used very easily to create a gallery without any coding knowledge, I am sure it can be used for more but I just use it to create gallery pages.
The other quick way to create a gallery is using Photoshop Elements 3 or 4, just highlight the images you wish to include in the organiser, then choose Create from the top and select html photo gallery.
The only problem with these is there is no built in ftp client to upload the pages whereas dreamweaver 8 includes this function though nothing to stop you using something like cuteftp or any multitude of free ftp clients.
