Internet Explorer 7 RC1

I maybe a little behind the times but I have just upgraded to Internet Explorer 7 RC1. Its seems much more efficient and allows greater screen use with little clutter or large un-used icons.

Has anyone else upgraded to this version and has anyone encountered any problems.

I've had the IE7 Beta installed for some time. I haven't got to grips with it and consequently don't like it. Hopefully this update will be better.

TBH my browser of choice is Firefox, a much better program IMHO

Tannin 01-10-06 22:11

I honestly don't understand why anyone even bothers trying it. Even if you set the appalling security problems of this product family aside (which you certainly should not, as they are unmatched in the industry), the various IEs are years behind the leaders for usability and interface improvements, and are utterly hated within the web designer community for their non-compliance with standards and consequent rendering errors, each of which requires tedious, clumsy and expensive workarounds.

I'll have to install it and test it when it's out of beta, unfortunately, in order to see what page layout mistakes this version produces, and figure out ways to make it display the page as designed (as the modern browsers generally do as a matter of routine, no extra work required), but it's difficult to imagine this stable producing a decent browser that I'd use by choice when they have a history of producing nothing but duds.

When I was younger and much more foolish I would try the latest and greatest from the likes of Netscape and Microsoft. I simply dont bother anymore but I noticed a copy and paste function from another forum had been solved in IE7 so I downloaded on the company laptop and tried it. I seems extremely easy to use allowing a user to view more of the screen than I.E 6.

The use of tabs allows multiple simultaneous sites within one occurance of the application. I can browse lots of sites and switch between them instead of back and forth on the task bar.

Favourites have been refined so they disappear off screen when a selection has been made.

I did not realize it was a beta version but I suppose 'Real Candidate 1' does suggest beta.

I assume it will be available as an automatic windows update in the fullness of time.

I must admit I dont like change but I do like this!

Stephen, I have not used IE for years now I only use Mozilla Firefox, I have tried IE7 but is still not as good as Firefox IMO. Give it a try you don't have to use it once installed you will be able to use either.

Cheers

Another vote for Firefox here. Haven't bothered with IE since installing FF. Only use IE for sites (such as "Windows Updates") that simply refuse to work with FF.

And yet another user of Firefox.

Chris 04-10-06 10:01

me too and as a mac user preferring FF to Safari is quite something, but then apple seem to be on a downhill slide all round, I think its called converging by PR people.

Gidders 04-10-06 18:30

I'm on Firefox since Stephen put me onto it. Only time I use IE is when I do my shopping at Asda - their site doesn't support FF :(

Saphire 04-10-06 21:29

Gidders I use firefox ver 1.5.0.7, I have no problems shopping at Asda online.

Hi

I have just gone back to FF from Opera, both of which are far better than IE

So now that I hit the wrong button and "upgraded from 6 to 7" can someone tell me how to get it to remember names and passwords. Pain having to log in each time.
Being normal and not liking change, I'm comming around to this--slowly.
Thanks
Jimbo

Jim, I use Firefox but I think you need to go to Tools>Internet Options>Content>Autocomplete - Settings ?

Usually when you fire up IE it will ask you if you want to turn Autocomplete ON.

I would advise you install Firefox (free), its got a brilliant password manager built in.

Happy New Year

Thanks Nick. Happy New Year to you and the rest of the group!

I liked it as soon as a tried it ,it is a lot better.

nirofo 01-01-07 16:20

I installed the final release of IE7 for a while, it's so buggy and wide open to attack that I soon got rid of it and went back to IE6. Another side effect was the slowing down of my computer, as soon as I got rid of it my computer speeded up again. I guess I'll wait for a good while to let all the unpaid Microsoft guinea pigs iron out the miriads of faults before I try it again!

I've installed IE7 on several other peoples computers by request, up to now all but one have asked for it to be removed.

nirofo.

anthony.rowell 01-01-07 16:37

I have use it for about two months now with no bother i realy like it i cant understand why some have problems with it i had it it as a trial,it must be some thing to do with differant peoples computers.

john crossley 01-01-07 16:40

I have been using it for about 3 weeks and think its great. It seems a lot faster than IE6.

Jimbo 01-01-07 16:55

Thanks for all your help. I have gone back to IE6. Will go back into my cave and wait for the world to evolve a little more.

Good decision!

Microsoft software is a bit like cheese, it takes quite a while to mature to the state where it's ready for human consumption.

I downloaded 7 and i liked it. I did remove it though for one reason. It would not allow me to acsess ftp adress which i need tp update my site.

Roy C 02-01-07 13:22

I have been running ie7 rc1 for a while now with no problems. I like it better than ie6 and have no problems updating my web site. I certainly have not experienced any slow down in performance.

carman 03-01-07 22:54

I have been using IE7 for some time I found no real problems so far. I like the new features. Its a much more friendly interface.:)

Why not add the ftp site to 'my network places'.

Canis Vulpes 04-01-07 09:22

Things have moved on since the original post. IE7 is now available for download - as the finished article. I have noticed it slows my office PC and my laptop but this is only when IE7 is running. Like all MicroSoft products the next is always more memory hungry than the last.

I like IE7 and its on all PC's that I use, I have had no detrimental operation whatsoever.

anthony.rowell 04-01-07 09:32

I have had no problem at all i would say it is a great impovement you must not download it and say i dont like it and delete it ! give it a fair trial !but of course differant systems may get problems but i would not know about that,cheers.Tony.

A good point well made, Tony.

After pro FireFox posts earlier in this thread, I tried it - some things I liked other things I disliked so I removed it, favouring IE7.

Its personal choice.
