Canon 300D question
I have a friend who visited before Christmas to photograph some models ( metal :D ) using flash. He has a Canon 300D. He also took pics using Stevies D100 and my X. So impressed with the flash setup he ordered a two head studio kit.
When comparing the pics from the day all the 300D have a blue cast, whereas D100 and the X are fine. Today the flash units arrived he has had a bit of a play. Again all showing a blue cast. Outdoor shots taken immediatly afterwards are fine with no cast. 1) Has anyone experienced this, and have a solution. 2) Does anyone have a link to an online manual that I can download and read. Thanks in advance. Don |
Don I am just reading the manual I think he may have the flash mode in the wrong setting but not sure. I am thinking tungsten or something like that.

Christine,
I was wondering if W/B has to be set manually or a simple trick like an 81A filter to warm the tones might work. He is plugging the studio units into a hotshoe adaptor if that is any help. Don |

Thanks for that page. Wow thats odd  .... good job I did this as a quote then looked at it as I typed, or you would think I'm totally mad. The link in the post was Neat Image but now showing correctly to Canon Europe   Thanks again I will now download. Don |
Don. You are not going mad  honestly. I must have had the wrong link in the copy command so quickly recopied it. Sorry!:)

Thanks for your help on this. I have now downloaded the manual so I can have a read. He will want to play again tomorrow so waiting on my answers. :) :) Don |
I would think to correct the problem you just put the WB setting on the flash mode the auto might not be reading the WB correctly. I never move mine from auto, I will give it a try and see if there is a difference. I have the camera in front of me.

That would be great if you can. The background we used on the day, and he used today, is very light tan - off white. I am sure Dulux would give it a fancy name. Subject is small model aero engine, so something a bit metalic. He used manual, so exposure just reflects flash output with no real impact from ambient light. Don |

Don, Two samples the first one was done on auto the second one I changed the WB to Flash. The photo the greys should be aprox 18% its one of those wind up torches. To me the first looks as though it has a blue cast the second a magenta cast. Good use of the ring flash.

Christine,
Thanks. You could not resist could you. :D :D I have just stitched two pics together to show the problem. Don Ooops sorry. D100 on the left, 300D on the right. |
That is very Blue, If the flash setting doesn't give the right colour I would try one of the others until I found one that was close or use a filter over the flash.
|
Thanks Christine,
I will suggest manual setting of W/B. His flash heads are bigger than my Multiblitz  so filtering them is not an option. Don |
I think you could be right with manual setting thats if it will correct that amount of blue cast.
|
Christine,
I will e-mail instructions tonight. We will soon know if all goes well, as he will want to show off. :D :D :D Don |

Don I have just done some more tests using every setting the tungsten setting gives the most blue very strong the next is Fluorescent the best colour is the cloudy setting. I don't understand why they are lighter on the blue ones as they where all done the same.
|
Christine,
Thanks again. Its a good job you are around. :) :) I am composing e-mail now and we will see what happens tomorrow. More oportunities here to play with your ringflash. :D Don |

I have just been looking at the ' cloudy ' setting image and that is very nice from a flash point of view. Nice suble shadowing. Very well done with your constructor skills. Don |
Thanks Don. I have modified the front screen on the ring today I had some very thick tracing paper so laminated a sheet to make it stiff but found it still wasn't dense enough so did another and put them both together and cut the ring out and placed that on the front, it gives a better filter. The one I had on I think was to thin. I may have lost an F stop but it seems to be better.
