Sigma 200-500mm f2.8 anyone?

A behemoth from Sigma announced today... gawd knows who'd buy it, a 400/2.8 is massive enough.

Your title says f4 which is why I didn't follow your comment above until I took the link and see it a constant f2.8.

Does look kind of chunky doesn't it - do you suppose its got IS :D

Oooops, now rectified.
Maybe aimed at sports photographers... can't see many dragging this around the countryside. Can't imagine it fitting on any gimbal heads either.

cheers,
Andy

Considering all the nice things I've said about my Sigma lenses do you think they'd let me try one out 'for a while' - providing they supply a caddy as well, of course!

I wonder how it compares to the 300-800 they make?

Heavier...much heavier.

I think you would need 3 shredded wheat before you went out with that for the day:)

Will not be at all surprise to see a shinny tiny battery operated golf car type automobile in shape of a tank only with lens instead of long gun be soon find its way into market with all these new heavvvvy huggggh lenses out there.

Wow!

Well, whoever does buy one should stay well away from airports, or they might find themselves rapidly surrounded by armed men in camouflage gear instructing you to "Put the rocket launcher down, and no sudden moves or we open fire". Free food and accommodation in a tropical island resort courtesy of the US government?

I would have thought that the best way to transport some of these long lenses is to use one a wheely trolley like the one favoured by old people. I wonder if anyone makes a suitable carrier?

Adey Baker 11-03-07 22:55

About a third of the length in those pictures is actually the lens hood, so it's not quite as huge as it first appears. It looks about right for a 500mm F2.8

I couldn't agree more - totally unusable!

it clearly is a beast... just imagine if Canon made an equivilent and it had initials like L, IS and DO in its name...
