Is the waiting over?

Nikon D400 & D3X? Do we hold our breath or what?

Thanks Andy for posting that, I hope it is true. If it is it would really set Nikon on a pedestal above anyone else. It was only yesterday when I posted my belief in these speculations but the more interestingly is a suggested announcement tomorrow 03.06 of Capture NX version 2.

If D3x is true I hope my lenses are upto it and it maybe 2009 before I can afford such an animal.

''If it is it would really set Nikon on a pedestal above anyone else'' Not necessarily true even if the rumour is as other manufacturers will not be resting on their laurels either. Anyway what does it matter that one particular manufacturer is at the moment ''on a pedestal above everyone else''? Competition is what we need to push quality forward and prices down as long as not too many manufacturers go to the wall. Better get off the hobby horse now! :o

lol @ Helping you figure out WTF Nikon’s doing

25MP pointles unless your printer is the size of a house and u have a tarrabillion terabyte drive for the RAWs

Chris 02-06-08 20:48

I think I am with Jamie (wow!?): as far as I am concerned the D80 is as good as I need and yes prints fine up to A3+ and would certainly have to get a newer/faster computer for more than the 10MP and couldn't carry anything bigger on the sort of walking that is my 1st love....until D90 and D90+ come out anyway.

However for professionals, I suppose it is necessary to keep up, but improvements should be on how quickly the sensor can gobble the light rather than zillions of pixels?

Having just invested in the D3 I agree with Stephen - Capture NX 2? looking forward to that!!

A D3 aswell Andy....!!! I think you should throw your signature away and start taking more "bonus" pictures to make some money from the 5 beasts you own!

Canis Vulpes 03-06-08 08:24

Confirmed, Capture NX2 is announced!

yeh right !!!!!!! May need a longer replacement for the 300mm though.

The great advantage of DX format is you can use lighter and less costly lenses and thats before getting into computer power to handle the Tiffs you would be creating.
For the benefit of others, a D2X 12mp NEF converts to a 70mb tiff.

Me, well I will go with Jamie and Chris and stick with what I have.

info from professional photographer magazine this month.....
The 24 megapixel Nikon D3x launch confirmation is expected shortly. 24mp giving the photographer even more options when cropping, and presumably retaining a decent mp count when croped to DX format.
They've declined to comment when asked about D3x files appearing on the latest D3 firmware upgrade (who left them there?....DOU!)

Canon are also due to re-address the full frame Nikon D3 series advances in high ISO performance, with an expected launch of a 16mp 5D mark 2. It is rumoured to shoot at 6.5 fps for short bursts (falling back to 3fps for longer bursts)...I suspect it'll be a big hit, as I remember how the 5D was when I was still at Jessops

an interesting summertime ahead

miketoll 08-06-08 18:07

The chip in the new Nikon is I think the new Sony chip which was mentioned some time ago so a 24mp Sony is presumably in the wings. The limiting factor will indeed be the resolving power of the lens and any imperfections (which all lenses have) will be cruelly shown up.

Joe 08-06-08 18:24

Yes, I think Sony are still makers and suppliers to just about every camera manufacturer, except Canon.
How soon after a new Nikon this sensor appears in one of their own branded cameras I think depends largely on the deal struck.....it was quite a while (nearly a whole season) before Sony brought out some of their previuos launches fitted with the same sensor plate as earlier Nikon launches.

Samsung have now entered the fray, they supply sensors for their own model GX-20 and the Pentax equivalent model K20D. A bit more competition can't do anyone any harm.

I stand corrected, thanks Duncan....I'd forgotten about Pentax (like many do) ;)

Adey Baker 08-06-08 21:23

...and don't forget the Foveon sensor in the Sigma DSLRs
