copyright symbol in photoshop

I know the copyright symbol can be generated in photoshop through a sequence of key presses but I have forgotten what they are?

Anyone know?

SharonW 11-01-06 17:26

I think it's alt0169. Possibly. That's how you do it in Word anyway.

just tried this and it seems to work - at least it does in elements.

Rob Chace 11-01-06 18:25

So.... Do you hold down alt, then type 0169? or press all at same time? Just tried it & can't get it to work on cs2.

postcardcv 11-01-06 18:36

hold down alt and then type 0169 one after the other...

Canis Vulpes 11-01-06 18:47

Thanks for the replies and I just tried it. Initially it did not work but using the number pad it does. The copyright symbol is displayed only when using the number pad and when the alt key is released.

Nigel G 11-01-06 20:48

Just for anyone else being as thick as me and not wanting to admit it - it helps if you click the text tool first !!!! :o

Jon Sharp 11-01-06 21:22

I coulsn't get it to work in my version of PS - I guess based on your comment Stephen that it only works form the numbers keypad - alas I don't have this on my laptop. The steam engine powered PC I have upstairs just collapses, straining to cope with any image file larger than 5mp.

I resolved the issue by copying it from Word and creating a saved text layer with varios suffixes which I can just drop into the image and then place with the move tool. Maybe a bit crude but it works though perhaps there is an easier way to do this with an action - another rainy day activity to research!

I find the best way is to create a new brush with the copyright symbol alongside my name, then when my masterpiece is complete I just select the copyright brush and click on my photo. The size and colour of text can be changed to suit your particular image.

Hi jon,

have close look at the MJKLUIO789 keys on your laptop, they should have small numbers on them too. That is the number pad on the laptop. To use press the Num lock button.

The numbers may be in a different place on your laptop.

Hi Andy,

Sorry to take away some of your smugness.

I've had a look at how to make a copyright brush on your website and have managed it.

Ant

Rob Chace 12-01-06 22:04

Thanks Andy, done it too!:)

Christine 13-01-06 21:04

Well yet again,I have tried ,but with no success.I remember Tom(Tracker) sent me details approx 12mths ago ,they were the same as Andy's which i printed off last night(all 9 pages!!!).I made the text using the copywrite symbol, then went to edit and found brush define(Elements 2.0),typed in my name and pressed save, but it just went into my pics as a picture.somehow cannot find a brush palette as such. The default brushes are there, but not the box which shows on Andy's diagram.Any ideas as to where I went wrong?.Yes I did make a box using the Marquee tool.It is something to do with the brushes.

robski 13-01-06 21:22

I am surprised that nobody has mentioned Windows "Character Map" utility for finding characters. Any character can pasted into your application. It also gives the Alt Code.

Start -> Programs -> Accesories -> System Tools -> Character Map

Saphire 13-01-06 21:26

Robski, thanks for that bit of information I never though of using it.

Nigel G 13-01-06 21:37

Hi Christine - It works in Elements 2.0 - I've just managed it so I'll try and un-pick where I think you may be slightly off.

OK, once youv'e got the © symbol then you add your name next to it ie ©Christine 2006 - or whatever you want. (Also set the size and font type at this point).

Now use your marque tool to draw the box round it.

Good you should get a box up that says Brush Name. On the left of the box is a picture of "©Christine 2006" and underneath should be a number which will be the brush number. On the right of the box is a space to name the brush - I simply called mine "copyright" - once you've named it simply click the "OK" button.

Now open up any picture and select the paintbrush tool. Move the cursor over the picture, right click and all your brush options appear. It should be in that list - probably at the very end.

Hope this helps.

Christine 13-01-06 21:40

Nigel,Thanks I will have another try.

Christine 13-01-06 21:56

Nigel,Thanks, yes another step further,I had not noticed the brush on the left in the box etc,and yes I actually got it to download on to a picture, but,I could not see the text, until I zoomed in,so are there any recommended sizes, please,or is one not suppposed to see anything until the pic is printed?.

Ian 13-01-06 22:13

I use Ulead Photo Express 4.0. and going into text press alt 0169 up comes © as it does here, hope this helps
Regards
Ian

wolfie 13-01-06 22:19

Christine, just increase the brush size, hardness and opacity. Not forgetting a suitable colour.

As Nigel, I've just tried it out in Elements 2. Had to install it first, but works, no problem.

Harry

Christine 13-01-06 22:20

But should one not have the text set to a certain size?.

wolfie 13-01-06 22:45

Christine, you can adjust the brush size.

1. Create new canvas approx 300 x 300 pixels
2. Input copyright symbol and suitable text, using a font size of approx 14 points
3. Select the paintbrush tool, then "Edit" in the dropdown box select "Define Brush" Input suitable name for the brush. Click Ok.

On your first atempt to use the brush a box will appear with the following message "This type layer must be simplified before proceeding" click Ok.

Your copyright brush should now work.

Adjust size and colour to suit.

Harry

Christine 13-01-06 23:02

thanks,Harry,will have another try tommorrow.

Jon Don't know if this has been mentioned further but I didn't want to forget to go back and answer. Nearly all laptops have a key which allows you to activate a number pad.

I'm afraid that it was already mentioned, by myself, (see post 10 in this thread) sorry.

Don't be afraid, doesn't hurt to reiterate such things :D
Especially to those of us who only quickly scan the threads rather than reading indepth

Rather than put the copyright notice on the image itself, using Adobe Bridge I prefer to embed it in the exif meta data. Bruce Frazer in his book Real World Camera Raw explains how, although you don't have to shoot in .raw - you can do it with .jpg files. Not sure how you edit the mata data if you don't have bridge though.

There are a number of external utilities you can use to edit the meta data, one such util can be found at the following link: http://www.pixlabs.com/DPU/overview/metadata.htm

OPTION G in OS X

After hours of searching online for this and trying all permutations of alt 0169 etc, I just wanted to add that if you are an Apple user, all you need to do is OPTION + G.

Sandra

Snowyowl 26-04-07 13:30

It works off of the main keyboard. Select text tool, pick your position, hold down alt. type 169, release and continue to type if required.

Believe me I tried that. Perhaps I have some other function appropriated to alt+1 etc ( not that I know of )

Zeb 06-05-07 01:30

The way of holding down ALT and hitting numbers on the keypad can be used to get more than just the copyright symbol.

http://www.pictureinthesky.net/exter...sionchart.html

That's a conversion chart I made a few years ago when I was editing files on a binary level. Each column has 4 sub-columns:

Denary, (0x)Hex, (%)Binary, ASCII

Some applications you can also use ALT+184 to get a copyright symbol but this depends on the language pack Windows has been set to and the font you're using. If ALT+184 works then you can use ALT and the number in the "denary" column to get foreign characters. I've not yet got round to making a new chart...
