Rule 5 - No discussion of entries in the thread

Rule 5 is there not to keep the thread length down, but to try to avoid influencing voters. Whether we like it or not, we are influenced by what other people think. So for example if someone posts "Fabulous, I really like this" or alternatively "Great shot... but I'm not sure how it fits the theme", subconsciously we are going to be influenced positively or negatively.

Recently there have been comments creeping in before the vote so we need to come to a democratic decision - do we take rule 5 out, or ask people to respect it?

My personal view is that rule 5 should stay, for the reasons that it was originally included. I think discussion of the entries is great, particularly Digi's up/downs idea & any behind the scenes commentary... but after the voting has closed.

What does anyone else think?

Glad it's not just me Clive, please let the rule stand.

Hear hear Gidders and Graham, couldn't agree with you more. There has been far too much conversation going on.

Tugboat 22-02-14 03:43

I also agree, thanks

This is all my fault and I do apologise. Is there any way I can have my comments deleted on the other thread? I belong to 4 different forums, and forgot that in this one, you don''t comment on the photos. Hope you guys don't stay too mad at me for too long. And next time, send me an ass kick private message to remind me if I do it again!

yes please let the rule stand.

ha ha, no worries, shall do!!!

DigiDiva 23-02-14 14:59

I do feel bad.........

Gidders 23-02-14 20:00

No need to feel bad. Things only progress or change when the existing way of doing things is challenged.

This forum very much operates as a democracy and just because things have 'always been done that way' it doesn't mean that its not good to re-examine periodically.

In this case, at the moment, the consensus seems to be to carry on as we were until the voting has finished... but without your input we would not have moved forward with the post voting feedback which enables everyone to learn - which has got to be a good thing :)

don't feel bad,I am sure no one is really worried, you have made some positive contributions to the forum and created more discussion on here....all good:D

DigiDiva 24-02-14 10:31

I feel better.....but still don't have my colour pop image!

DigiDiva 05-03-14 21:17

I have a question to ask...I understand that rule 5 says you can't comment on the actual entries, but is there any chat allowed about the theme itself? I feel it a little 'unsociable' if someone makes the effort to set the theme and all that ever goes in there, in a whole fortnight, is entries. No comments about the theme, issues/problems/questions you have about the theme. Can this be clarified as Im a little frustrated with these restrictions. I like to share comments/ideas/thoughts about the theme.

John&me 06-03-14 07:59

My thoughts of it is all comments should be made after the challenge is finished
then share comments/ideas/thoughts about the theme.

John

Tugboat 06-03-14 09:07

this is just an idea!!!
why not just start up a new thread to comment about the challenge / theme or general chat,or private message the person if you have a concern about something.
I'm sure that should be allowed!
for me, extra comments in the challenge thread just takes more time to look through when you want to have a look at the entries.

Gidders 06-03-14 11:47

My thoughts are that comments/discussion to clarify the actual nature/terms of the challenge are fine and actually necessary.

General comments such as 'oooh that will be difficult' or 'right up my street' I don't really have a for or against on other than, like Trena says - just make the thread longer without really adding anything.

Specific comments such as 'Ive got an idea using a.../at ... location' just give other people ideas. I'm happy to share my (limited) knowledge and (half baked) ideas with anyone who asks... but I'm keeping them close to my chest until the challenge closes & the votes are counted ;) but then by all means. JMHO

graham harcombe 06-03-14 14:05

My preference would be to keep the competition for entries only. I accept that there will be a need for clarification of the subject, but I really don't enjoy reading non-relevant and/or unimportant comments in this section of the forum. I have no quibble with starting a new thread in any of the appropriate categories for any chats and comments of interest and I will willingly join in.

Graham
