A word of warning re. W10

Just a word of warning if you're planning on upgrading to W10. This applies to people using Nvidia graphics cards.
I've been usin W10 insider program for some time now and all was good. However the latest version 10240 is presenting problems which at the moment there is no way of preventing. Microsoft have altered the drivers for Nvidia which create a problem with Photoshop and possibly Lightroom.
With Photoshop the new driver will not allow the photoshop to use the Graphics Processor.
On anothet point I'm unable to use Lightroom as I'm unable to open any catalogue, I'm guessing that this is also due to a similar problem regarding drivers.
As I have W7 on a seperate drive this has not caused me problems. However be warned

Thanks for that. I'm due the download anytime soon. I'll watch the Nvidia web site.

Peter I forgot to mention, it's possible to get the correct driver from Nvidia which corrects the problem, but unfortunately on the next W10 upgrade the drivers will again cause problems.
With regard to Lightroom the problem can be overcome by selecting 'Run As Administrator' I had the same problem with CS6, but cannot remember how I overcame the problem.
Old age is certainly causing me problems these days.

A good warning - thanks Harry. Shame, I've been looking forward to the download.

wolfie 28-07-15 19:58

Graham. I like using W10 and will definitely upgrade to the final version.
I've now sorted Lightroom, but have found my sound system is inoperative. With regards to the driver problem and Photoshop I'm sure a compromise will be reached with Nvidia and Microsoft. However any wotk I do will be placed on an external drive so that it can be opened in W7.

Thanks Harry for the advice. I'm heavily diverted by other matters just now so I think I'll just defer the download and see what Microsoft and Nvidia come up with. (Possibly there are other programmes we don't use that are similarly affected by auto updates and this will pile more pressure on M'soft?)

graham harcombe 29-07-15 19:02

Thanks H. I don't have the Nvidia, so fingers crossed - the magical 29th is almost over, but they predict a graduated roll-out, so patience is the watchword.

As an 'Insider' I recieved it last night. It caused me a few problems, but suprise, suprise the Nvidia driver was not overwritten, so CS6 is running fine.
What was very strange and I've no idea why I had to reload most of my motherboard drivers. USBs were acting up, resulting in my card reader not working, also found there was no sound output, again this was corrected by running my motherboard disk. Now everything appears to be perfect and I must admit to quite liking this new Windows 10. Fingers crossed.

This article looks like a solution to troublesome drivers updates http://www.howtogeek.com/223864/how-...on-windows-10/

Useful information - thanks Clive- saved it for when the time comes.

A nice balanced article on Windows 10 installation.

I'm attaching a link to an excellent article on Forbes that breaks down the pros and cons. The bottom line is interesting; the free installation remains valid until 29th July 2016. So, you may wish to defer installation for several months, as there are problems at the moment. Notably, if your system uses Nvidia graphics driver there is a real deal breaking conflict. Watch the space Link to Forbes article

PS I did note that Harry had no problems with the Nvideo, but the above article highlights it, so it must still be bothering some.

Graham. I think Nvidia problem has been resolved. This was done almost as soon as the problem occured. I've certainly had no further problems since I updated drivers from Nvidia.

Glad that seems sorted. I shall be installing W10 myself and I'm delighted that the glitches are being dealt with so quickly.

Graphics

Still running W.7 Home Premium but have W.10 waiting to install.
Let the thing breeze thro' auto updates yesterday (as I have done for about four years). Restarted the machine and blow me no graphics just the big ugly stuff you see in safe mode:mad:.
When I looked the Windows update included a variety of items for Nvidia which reminded me of the problems previously described here.
Not a big job to restore the system to pre-update. But I thought I'd share this.

wolfie 21-08-15 19:44

W10 is running very well now including the major update yesterday evening over two hours to complete. As I mentioned previously the Nvidia problem did not occur. The update was for 'Insiders' so for the time being this update will not be available to the general public.
I have just the one problem now and so far have not found the remedy. This problem involves Lightroom. Firing up Lightroom gives me the message "Error unable to find Catalogue' with three options that have no effect. However right clicking Lightroom and running as Administrator works OK. Just a little annoying as this method requires three mouse clicks instead of one Unless something catastrophic happens I will not go back to W7.
