extreme macro with the Canon MPE65

After pondering for ages I finally cracked and ordered an MPE65 last week. It is a lens with very limited use as the range at which it focuses is only a few inches. At the lowest magnification it delivers 1:1 macro and goes all the way down to 5:1 for extreme close ups. I had read mixed reviews of how well it worked with a ring flash (which I already had for macro work) but decided to give it a go and thankfully it seems to work fine. My main aim with this lens is to get some close up shots of insects over the next few months.

In the first two days of owning it I am pleased with it so far and hope that with practice the results will get better. Attached are shots of the same moth at 1:1 and then at 5:1.

Is that manual focus or does it still work with auto?

I think your going to need a flash gun for this lens

It is manual focus only, with the shallow dof it is very easy to miss the focus.

I have never tried focus stacking but think I might have to look into it, so if anyone has a tips...

That is exactly the sort of thing I would like to be able to achieve, might need a few years practicing first though!

Found a fly this morning so popped it in the fridge for a few minutes to slow it down and then grabbed a few shots of it. Definitely need to get my head around focus stacking. Can anyone recommend any decent software for it?

I left you an answer in the form of tutorial but unfortunately and sadly the IMG code of page is turned off for reasons that I can't understand and therefore the images won't show up in the tutorial despite all the effort to make them for sake of ease and understanding.
Can some one look into this and turn the IMAGE code active?
It is only for benefit of all.
