Aperture priority problem

Hope you can help!

I bought a Nikon D50 3 weeks ago & I seem to be getting persistent problems with over exposure when using in aperture priority mode.

My trouble is I always question myself first as these camera's are a lot more complicated that the one I learnt on; a Praktica MTL5, (manual only); but then I keep going back to what I understand to be correct: in this mode I choose my priority of aperture then the camera automatically adjusts the shutter speed.

I've been out this evening taking some random scenic shots about 2 hours before dusk and setting to F8 & F11; again well over exposed. Changed to manual with centre weighted metering & they're OK!

Is there something stupid I'm forgetting or would you advise a trip back to the shop for a replacement?

Thanks,

Al.

Maybe the aperture your selecting is just not suitable for the conditions? The camera can only compensate so much to achieve the correct exposure after all. What does the exif data say for the other settings?

Thanks Rob; rather embarrassed here! EV reading was showing +1.7. Spent ages looking through the menu to rectify then found the EV button next to the shutter button! What a plonker!
Thanks,
Al.

Don't worry it happens to everyone now and again.
