Canon EF70-200mm f2.8L IS USM...suggestion?

Hi, i plan to add up the power of my Canon 50D and think of buying the above lens. Anyone here using this lens? how good is it? do you recommend me to get this one? or any other alternative choice? Thank you.

I'm using this lens from 2003. No issues whatsoever. In fact I LOVE this lens. There should be more members here to support my comment.

I had the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 for a while and it's a nice lens, while using it I has no complaints about it. Then I tried a Canon 70-200 f4 and realised that the Sigma was falling short. The Canon was sharper across a range of apertures and gave much truer colour rendition, I decided that I could live without the f2.8 so swapped over the the Canon f4 (non-IS) lens and have not regretted it for a moment. As well as the optical improvement the Canon handles better and also the AF is significantly faster and more acurate. If I'd had the cash I'd have gone for an f2.8 IS, but the standard f4 is a very good cheaper alternative.

Hi Postcardcv, thanks for your share of thought and experience in using both lenses. Well, in that case, i'll go for the canon.

Thanks very much to you and others who had shared their experience with me. That really helps a lot.

I use this lens (in fact the newer model-USMII) and it is undoubtedly the best zoom from canon.
The downside is it is long and heavy.
The F4.0 is much lighter (half the weight) and although is without IS, is almost as sharp.
Its much easier to lug around and much less obtrusive for candids on a busy street...also is 1/3 the cost.

Best choice: Canon 70-200 F 2.8
Value for money: Canon 70-200 F 4

Canon do do the f4 in an IS version, rather more expensive than the none IS.

I stand corrected....you're right about that Mike...
