What lense
 

Hi I'm new too photography and have just got myself a Nikon D90, If I wanted too photograph something from 10 feet away and wanted too photograph something that was 200 feet away is there a lense that will do the job or do i need to get Tc's aswell. It would be a good lense as I'd keep the lense and replace the body. Thanks Ger.

I use a 400mm prime, The Minimum focus distance is just over 11 feet, and the Minimum focus distance for my 70-200mm is 4 feet.
Adding a TC will degrade the pictures some, so getting a good lens defeats the object, but I still do it some times :)

What sort of 'something' are you referring to?
Just about all lenses are capable of focusing on items at between 10' and infinity, though long telephotos might struggle to get as close as 10'.

Are you after a single lens to have both in focus at the same time? (A wide angle would do this easily with moderately small apertures) or are you after something to make the object at 200' look like its 10'? (Generally the job of a telephoto)

Few (if any) zoom lenses will cover a 20x variation in focal length if this is what you're after. I think 15x is about as far as super zooms go - though cropping could make up the difference.
If the something you're talking about is between the size of a house & a man, most kit lenses should enable you to get a shot at 10' or 200' that could be quite presentable, the views seen at the two distances would be quite different though, with the more distant shot giving more of the surroundings.

Sorry I would be photographing mainly Birdlife. Mmmmm the more I look in into it the more I think I'll probably need two lenses one that specialises in close up another that does mid range. I do a bit of digiscoping aswell so if I new the distances were fairly long I would bring that set up. I would also like to do some Birds in flight aswell.

I don't understand that, why does getting a good lens defeat the object. Surely the better the lens, the better the image quality.

If you have a lens that’s nice and sharp, adding a TC can degrade the quality of the picture! If you pay £1,500 pounds to get nice pictures why add something that can degrade the picture!

My reply when asked that question is always "how much do you have in your budget?"
