Solved. I put it in Av mode and then saved those settings to C1 and the Aperture is saved at f11 with the shutter speed left to Auto - that's exactly how I wanted it. Amazing what a good dump can achieve!:D

It looks like a camera battery issue.
40D uses a Lithium polymer battery and all lithium batteries come with a shelf life.
So, when you don't use the battery for a long period of time, the life of the battery starts deteriorating. So, you should go for a battery replacement. before doing that clean the battery contacts properly once and keep it for charging and try once more.

I'm going to have to disagree with you about that: I have three regularly used batteries for my 40D, the camera (and obviously batteries) were used almost daily, there's always a fully charged battery in my pocket.

I've already said that I'd cleaned the contacts on the battery and the camera.

I did discuss (by email) what may be the problem with a repair specialist and he suspects that either the shutter motor or mirror drive motor has failed, "when this occurs current tries to go high and camera shuts down to protect circuits", and he can probably fix it for me for £120.00 - but don't tell my wife.:D
