Downloading RAW Through a Card Reader

I've been trying to use my card reader to download RAW files taken with my 20D but none of the programs that I have available seem to recognize RAW that way. I can download jpeg directly into the Windows' viewer but can only do RAW from camera to EOS Capture. EOS Capture says that it can't find a camera when I try to use the reader.
Has anyone else run into this snag? Anyway around it? Would Picassa do it perhaps?

Hi Dan I use an oldish Kodak usb card reader only does CF cards and this works fine with RAW.

Is it possible to update the drivers for the card reader you are using?

As for canon's software, sorry no help there never used it.

Best of luck

Pete

I'll check out the drivers. Good thought. Thanks!

If you're using Xp Then you should not need any drivers.

I don't use Canon software, so not to sure about EOS Capture but I'm pretty sure that is for controling the camera direct from a computer. I think you need either EOS Viewer or DPP.

I normally move my Raw images direct to a folder on my desktop via a cardreader then proceed from there.

If all you require at this stage is a viewer then Picassa will do the job for you.

Eos Viewer works. I was trying to over-complicte the whole process but now I seem to have got it. Thanks for the clues.

Dan

Have you tried downloading the latest version of Canon ZoomBrowser EX update from Canon website ? I downloaded version 5.6 a few months ago and it downloads Raw from reader now.

As an alternative download the Adobe "Lightroom" beta, I've been playing with it most of the morning, I must say I'm seriously impressed, and as this is only the beta version it will probably get better.

Breeze Downloader. I never, ever thought it would be worth spending actual money on a program that only downloads files from one place (e.g., card reader or camera) to another, but since a friend suggested this one and I tried it out for one day, I am a cast-in-concrete fanboy for it.

I won't go into detail about it as you can read all about it and see for yourself. Go to http://www.breezesys.com/Downloader/index.htm and download the free 30-day trial.

(Yup, 30 day free trial, but I dug out my credit card after just one day - I could see that this was a product I'd never want to be without, so I figured I might as well just do it.)

Christine, I had a look at Lightroom and I have to say I'm pretty impressed by it. This just could be the very first Adobe product that I actually like A lot of the functionality is not relevant to me - I have an existing system for sorting and organising that I'm not likely to change in hurry, I have a more efficient way to create most (but not all) slideshows, and I never print anything - but even so, I may well shell out the $$$ for Lightroom when it comes out.

Yes, Adobe has finally started taking performance and the user interface seriously. After years of despising the company for the usability horrors known as Photoshop and Acrobat, it rather looks as though Adobe is turning over a new leaf.

I have had no problems at all with the Lightroom beta, and though it's early days yet, I will watch developments with interest.

PS: be sure to watch the videos on the download site - they really help a lot.
