Longest Lunar Eclipse of Century. Great photography opportunity

Longest total lunar eclipse of the century is to occur soon, on Friday July 27, when the super moon is going to be hidden under earths shadow to display a mesmerizing Red Moon or Blood moon that is going to last long (Total eclipse is visible, depending on your location and for best viewers, its going to last 103 minutes! As entire eclipse will be visible to many of our photographers, you may have a great opportunity of bring your gears out and have a go on this wonderful celestial event. Considering its summer in upper hemisphere, a good chance of non cloudy, clear night exist, unless... but lets keep the fingers crossed. Even if not taking the pictures, don't miss this unique opportunity to enjoy the night, best in company of friends and love ones. Its going to be memorable. Regrettably its going to be day time in USA and no part of eclipse visible! See the map for your opportunity and planning.

Do you know enough technique to capture the moon in general and then the difficult one, The Full Red Moon of Total Eclipse?
This tutorial might help the beginners and does a good job in explaining a lot of information on how to shoot moon, made by my favorite photographer, Tony Northrup

Enjoy.

Sorry can't stand him! But I could perhaps watch his wife. :) The moon will be totally eclipsed when it rises here, but at least it's at a sociable time & still has a while to go. Shooting a normal full moon is dead easy compared to the totally eclipsed version, which is something like 10 stops dimmer.

Haha. Yes she is cute. And comes always with a good question that you wanted to know.

Anyways its almost here.... Few more hours only left.

Few things or possibly, only thing you want to remember:
- Moon light is nothing but reflected sun light so all that applies to sun light works here. Important to remember: "Golden Sunny Rule of F16" That is at F16, 1 over chosen ISO, is the right shutter speed! This works best for Full moon (Before or early phase of eclipse).
- Once eclipse runs deeper, you need to find that sweet spot by trial and error. In fact you can have more of solid moon shadow (Umbra) or partial shadow (Penumbra) (LINK), depending on your EV settings.
- Then during full eclipse, Light is incredibly dim. So be ready to open the F stop full and use ISO of 3200 or whatever gives you acceptable image quality.
And very important point to remember, No matter what you do, full eclipse moon (Red or Bloody Moon) is going to be somehow blur and I'm yet to see one clear sharp image (If not tampered in pp).
- If you don't have a good long focal length lens to isolate moon for full size moon image, you are NOT out of luck. Just use that normal lens 50mm or less and then try to get camera fixed throughout the eclipse, when viewing a synergistic foreground for you image, then have multiple images at fixed time period, say every five minutes or less (This is the longest eclipse of century, lasting 103 minutes total, so divide that by number of images you want and you have the right elapse time) and the collage you can make at the end, using one of the foreground sight, is going to be something very interesting, even though it will not show the detail of moon, but the change of shadow and color, then the elevation over the horizon that is very charming.

And in case you have that long lens, and opt to go for moon portraits! then you can play later to show the best Collage that can show your work at best and sky is the limit. So lets see your image, if you are the lucky one that can see & picture it and keep the fingers crossed for devil i.e. "Clouds".

The devil didn't cooperate, after weeks of clear skies the entire event was eclipsed by a storm.

Been there, Done that, so I share your pain dearly. However the good news is that there are a lot more to come and to see. Be ready for the next one in Jan 2019, some 6 months from now that is going to be visible in most part of the world, cloud permitting!!! (Which is going to be a bigger but, as its going to be winter that time).

Anyhow, some images from all over the world:
