Deteriating image quality with Photoscape?

Had a chance to visit a local church this afternoon to experiment with a newly aquired panasonic FZ38, as lighting was poor the camera was mounted on a tripod and set to timer, the results were quite pleasing but after I tried to convert the image to black and white and adjust contrast I noted a significant amount of distortion/noise had found it's way into the darker parts of the picture.

Anyone have any idea what might be happening, never noticed this happen before!! I would have uploaded the pics here but deleted them before WI had a mind to start this thread!!

Pics were taken in jpeg..

Depending on hte jpeg settings, it could be that there's a lot of jpeg compression going on when the picture is taken. If the editing done ot the picture is not that heavy, you probably won't notice this, but the heavier editing will tease out the lack of detaiil in the original jpeg.

Check that you are using the finest (lowest compression) jpeg setting possible. I take it that this is a "superzoom" type camera, in which case it would have a ver, very small sensor, and you might be asking too much of it in the circumstances.
