Note, there has been nothing official from Nikon

Makes you wonder why they would bother with a new 6mp bottom end camera when the D50 is already there at a rock bottom price. A budget 10mp would surely make more sense?

They want to reduce costs, and undercut the competition to get people in to the Nikon system.

I have read that it lacks the AF motor so can only AF with AF-S lenses. It might even be the case that it cannot meter with non AF-S lenses, in which case most people will avoid third party lenses. That must be an incentive to Nikon.

Cunning so & so's are'nt they? Attract newbies to Nikon and then tie them into Nikon lenses. They all do this sort of thing which is why say a Sigma lens has to be rechipped sometimes when a new camera comes out. Might make marketing sense but it annoys me!

On this page as i type is an advert for a D50 body for £299. How much cheaper would a D40 have to be to attract people to go for it's cut down features. The D50 may be entry level but it's got most things you need. It's going to be small - but the size difference between the Canon budget cameras and the Nikon is something that often attracts people to Nikon. And those less into the techniques of photography are often attracted more by mp count than anything else and 6mp just doesnt sound much these days.

Don't forget we are only dealing with rumours.I agree with greypoint so my feeling for what its worth is a D50 replacement. Launch in time for Christmas makes a lot of sense.
