software for B & W photos
 

I have noticed on the gallery a comment on a B & W shot that the "duotone"
reminded him of his old agfa paper.I understand that various grades of paper
would give a different finish to your b & W shot.
My question is what software is available to enhance B & W photography.I currently convert colour to B & W using Microsoft Digital Image Suite 10. My cameras are a D50 & Olympus C740.Any suggestions anyone may have would be appreciated.Please don,t get too technical with me as I am easily lost with
too much technical jargon.

I cannot help with your Olympus but if you shoot RAW from a Nikon D50 and process this RAW image in Nikon Capture NX it is possible to adjust the B&W conversion. B&W conversion from RAW should be most faithful to true black and white.

Nikon Capture NX is a superb RAW converter for all Nikon cameras and applications - its worth a try!

Nikon Capture NX is available as a 30 day trail from the Nikon Website.

I don't know which image editing package you are using, but if you use Photoshop, I found this link very useful when I was learning about B&W conversion:

I do not use photoshop I have microsoft digital image suite. I am going to give
powerretouche a try as suggested by John.

You could also try Convert to B&W Pro, although I know all the techniques for converting to B&W ,I find this quick to use it and gets the job done.
