Canon Prime lenses
 

Dear all,

at present i use a EF50mm f1.8 Prime,which for what it costs is a fine lens,but it does have a problem maintaining focus at low light.

Does anyone own the EF50mm f1.4 and give opinions,advice etc,etc.

Sorry I can't help you with 1.4 but I have identical lens to yours and as you said is wonderful for the price and size. I actually have no problem with it and due to small size, is always in my gadget.

Have you tried keeping the lens on manual on low light or busy surrounding?

Thanks Sassan, me thinks thats just a little rich for me,never realised that Canon did an f1.

Have tried the f1.8 on manual,but not with any particular sucess,maybe i need to see this from another angle....

From what I've read the 1.4 is a superb lens (so it should be!) and if you really want to go mad I think Canon do a new f1.2. At a price!! Me, I'm happy with my 1.8 cheapo.

Mike,Canon do indeed do an F1.2 and if you look at Sassan's link a F1.0,but as you say at a price.

Rob,many thanks for the link,think it covers fairly much all points,except the one, i am after, low light focussing.

This is where the pro Canon 1D range come into their own they are meant to focus with 1 stop less light that the 30D etc. Another money drain :D

If you can't afford the 1.2 L at least the 1.4 is a big step in the right direction. The main thing I disliked about the 1.8 was the very noisey AF motor and the general build is not very robust. But Hey you can pick them up second hand for £50. On the plus side they do score 8/10 on the optics front.

Rob, i was looking at matching the F1.4 with a 5d,as a fairly permanant combination, but don't get me wrong the F1.8 is a damn fine lens,i think i might need to go and try that combi before i get carried away,many thanks for the reply.

Lee, what body are you using the lens on?

I ask as, not so long ago I was checking the focus speed of the 135mm f/2 L lens (an absolute beauty)...tried on the 350d which it 'hunted' badly on....then fitted the same to the 30d to find it locked on it's target almost as quick as my eye could focus. weird, as I had assumed the focus sensor is pretty much the same in both bodies?

On the nikon side of things, I've found similar comparing the same lenses on a D80 vs a D200, the D200 being massively quicker focusing with the bright prime lenses.

Joe, at present on a 20d,which for the most part works fine, but i hadn't considered that before,so something else to factor in,thanks Joe.
