Err99 - Camera Broken!!

Alright chaps, bit of a bad day yesterday

I was out on a run out with the car club lads, got my camera out and attached the 50mm prime ready for some crystal clear shots of the scenery, the cars and the action. I focused, pushed the button and..........................

Nothing

The camera made a funny whining noise and flashed up with the Err99 message on the display and upon further inspection, when you attempt to take a shot, the mirror flips up as normal, but then gets stuck in the up position and takes a hell of a long time to come down unless the power is shut off...it doesnt even look like the censor is opening!!

Im fairly cheesed off as the camera is rated for 100,000 actuations and has only gone past 10,000. I dont have a great deal of money and now this!!!!!!

What is the problem likely to be?

What places local to the Leeds area would be able to fix it?

Whats the likely cost?

Yours in a seriously foul mood

Scott

Just a suggestion but have you caught the function button for mirror lock up.
Error 99 is a general fault but most times its down to the contacts on the lens.

I agree, Err 99 seems fairly common among Canon users and in most cases easilly recified by cleaning the contacts between camera and lens.

Give it a try or fit another lens that may have cleaner contacts with less electrical resistance. Maybe that 50mm lens hadn't been used in a while.

Wheres the mirror lock up button??

Heres a very strange thing....the camera is working again now

I put the 70-300 lens on and fitted the 2nd battery (turns out I only had one in yesterday...could it have been an insufficient power issue???) and its working, with the 50 prime too (which is brand spanking new!)

My head hurts

Error99 is a general catch-all fault usually caused by a lack of communication between camera/lens/card/battery or any combination thereof and removing/reinserting each will usually correct the problem - sometimes you don't even get error99, it just goes completely blank, but it usually clears with any of the above

Scott, I don't know anything about the 10D but in the manual page 149 it is custom function 12.

Thanks people

Given what Adey has just stated, Im begining to think this could be nothing more than an insufficient power issue as the single battery was low (I thought it was charged!) and now the second battery is in, it seems fine!

I'll check that in the manual Saphire...could come in handy just incase something like this happens again

I supposed the benefits of the camera going up the wall would be the fact that I would have saved up and upgraded to the 20D :D

Silver lining and all that

Andy gave a percise and good explaination.
If seen again, you want to turn off the camera and then on if still see it, open the battery compartmet and close it. Usually you are back to business at this point.
IF you use an eos lens EF EFs that generates the problem, you need to clean the contacts with a pencil eraser. Be gentle.
If you have a Sigma that cause that problem, its the old inner chips (Incompatibility that needs a new chips installation by manufacturer) and if you use a TC attached to and old FD lens via adapter, you need to tap the contacts.
If non is working, memory needs a check.
Well seems your problem is solved for now but you are ready if it happens again.
