All good advice. There is also performance monitor:
Start Menu -> Control Panel -> Admin Tools -> Performance.
That can also be used to work out which resources are maxing out.

I doubt adding 1GB RAM would slow the system. I have 1GB + 512 MB and that was much faster than 2 x 512 MB....
