FastStone is my preferred general editing tool, with Niks, Microsoft ICE (Panoramic stitching) & CombineZP (focus stacking) to expand it for less routine operations. All are now free :)

For macro I generally find A4 paper is fine (available in a huge range of colours) A3 is more than adequate if you want a bit more.

Spring clamps are fine for holding it to any support.
