If it's a USB drive device you should see a small icon appear in the bottom right corner of your desktop, it should say "new hardware detected". If it doesn't then your USB is not set up correctly if at all and your device is not being seen, do you have any other USB devices you can test on your computer? If you have more than one USB socket, try some of the others, sometimes some USB sockets don't connect for whatever reason. If you have a USB device connected that is working try you new device in that socket, if that doesn't work you may have a faulty unit, or you may need to install the driver software that came with your device.
