A good analogy Clive but I could not afford one of those either.
Thorens TD160B MkII was more within my reach. I did lash out on the arm though on the same principle, SME Series III S. In a photographic context the equivalent of a solid tripod was through the weight of the platter and the addition of a Spectra vibration damping pad to which the LP sticks like the proverbial.
Talk of tripods or other support we have not touched on here. But a soft lens and additional blurr, however small through camera shake, and my results would have been even worse.
