Hi there - I'm a Mac user - I use a separate FireWire drive that is just for my photo storage - 750Gb. It also stores copies of my Aperture 2.1 and iPhoto Libraries that are backed up weekly and copies of final pictures after they have been played with in either Photoshop or Aperture. I usually clear this file monthly by burning its contents to disc and storing elsewhere. I'm sure it may be OTT and cumbersome for some but it suites me and I think this is a horses for courses matter. I know some who store everything on their main hard drive and have never had problems and others who have done similar to me and lost stuff left right and centre. If you make a living from your photography then you need a backup of everything and a further backup of important commercial work.
