I am sure that if they were up to DSLR standards then people would be switching in their thousands. One thing that I have gathered from reading posts on the subject is that the P & S cameras are nowhere near as good with regards to noise at higher ISO's - I recently read a good photographers review of a top of the range P & S any he reckons it is almost unusable above ISO 200.
That's not to say that they are not useful as a walkabout when a DSLR is too much bulk to cart around.
