Ben, for that kind of money, I think you would be better off buying 2nd hand. See whatthere is on ebay. There should be plenty of budget 75-300 zooms for the kind of money you are looking at. If you can find one with EDO glass then it's worth paying a bit extra for that feature.

You may be able to get an older lens with very good quality glass/design but doesn't have AF or some metering modes; these would go very cheap compared to a more up to date lens. I don't know how important the latest features are to you.
