I remember going to a lecture where the photographer was showing pictures of people on a trip in India, all taken with a 21mm lens
(on film so a true 21 mm - 13mm eq on a 1.5/1.6 crop sensor). While they would not have been most peoples idea of portraiture, they were certainly dramatic
