Default Second night of course: Aperture

Last night was the second night of my course and it was on aperture. I have to say, I learned so much. Firstly we were set into groups of three and were taking portraits, moving up a few F stops at a time at around 250 iso and about 4 feet away from the subject. The subject was in front of some detailed wallpaper which got more and more detailed as we got higher in the F stops. Once this was complete and we compared our pictures we then went through a presentation with the tutor looking at some photos she had taken utilising different elements of depth of field. This was great as it gave you a better understanding of the impact of depth of field and how it can be used to its best.

After the presentation we then lined up fruit and veg and again using incremental stops in F we used the fruit to improve our techniques and it was again really eye opening. I went one step further and took a few pictures of a keyboard (sounds boring) but you could really get an idea of the rule of thirds working with the depth of field on it as the letters on the centre line were very clearly focused.

It really was an eye opener last night and I cant wait for my next lesson next week which is shutter speed!!!

Or even the 3 excellent "stickies" written by Duncan (yelvertoft) on our own General Technique forum
